Job Announcement

The Fairfax County Health Department is a progressive public health leader serving 1.2 million residents from diverse ethnic, cultural, and economic backgrounds. This position works within the Division of Epidemiology and Population Health, and will be a member of the division's Acute Communicable and Emerging Diseases (ACED) team and HAI/AR unit. Duties will include leading HAI surveillance using multiple data sources. Identifies and investigating outbreaks of healthcare associated and selected drug resistant infections and making public health recommendations to reduce further transmission. Conducts and monitors case and outbreak investigations. Promotes and monitors disease prevention through infection control measures, antimicrobial stewardship, and other mitigation strategies. Leads quality assurance efforts; and developing and maintaining data visualization systems. May supervise part-time and contract staff working in infection prevention and control.


Employment Standards

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Master's degree in Public Health (MPH) or Master of Science (MS) with graduate work in epidemiology and/or biostatistics plus two years of experience in epidemiology-related work.

CERTIFICATES AND LICENSES REQUIRED:

  • Valid driver's license
  • AED-Required within 60 days of hire
  • CPR -Required within 60 days of hire

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
  • The appointee to this position will be required to complete a criminal background check, child protective services check, driving record check, and a sanction screening to the satisfaction of the employer.
  • This position is considered a Public Health Emergency First Responder and may be called to perform response work for long periods of time, with little or no notice. Available to respond for duty in the event a public health emergency is declared

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Knowledge of public health principles and practices of healthcare-associated infections and/or antimicrobial stewardship.
  • Knowledge in infection prevention and control guidelines and experience implementing best practices.
  • Ability to work independently and communicate effectively using written, verbal, and electronic methods.
  • Must be results driven, detail-oriented, and demonstrate effective and customer-oriented communication skills.
  • Must have experience with data analysis and database management using statistical software.
  • Experience in documentation standards and ability to fully document interactions with clients and other agencies.
  • Ability to think quickly and apply public health knowledge to complex situations to be able to provide clients with appropriate public health recommendations and education.
  • Supervisory experience.
  • Demonstrated use of quality improvement methodology to improve a public health outcome is a plus.
  • Certification in Infection Control (CIC).
  • Proficiency using Microsoft Office applications, i.e., Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook and Teams.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Job is generally sedentary in nature, and requires walking, standing, sitting (for long periods of time), and kneeling, reaching, bending, climbing stairs; may be required to lift or carry up to 25 lbs. as required for the position. Uses hands to grasp, handle, or feel. Visual acuity is required to read data from paper and on a computer monitor or other electronic device; ability to operate keyboard driven equipment and computer and use of touchscreen; Position frequently communicates and must be able to exchange accurate information with others verbally and in writing. Generally, works in an office environment and may occasionally be required to perform job duties outside of the typical office setting. Ability to drive a motor vehicle. All duties performed with or without reasonable accommodations.
