Role and Responsibilities:


The Direct Support Professional (Employment Specialist) will be a personal supporter and life coach focused on skill-building and equal employment opportunities for persons with disabilities.



  • Be a mentor, teacher, role model, and advocate for people with disabilities.

  • Be a motivator who helps people reach their full potential.

  • A flexible, creative, doer who is willing to try anything, including:


    • Job Development (helping people find jobs).

    • Job Coaching (helping them learn a new job in the community).

    • Life Coaching (developing personal care, money management, safety, life skills, etc.)

    • Community Connecting (trying new hobbies and participating in recreational activities).

    • Working one-on-one with participants at job sites.



Experience:



  • No experience, No Problem!

  • 6 months employment in a position that demonstrates accountability and decision making (nonpaid family caregivers or related personal experience can be substituted) (Preferred)


Qualifications:



  • Must have a valid driver's license.

  • Cheerful, helpful, patient, kind, easygoing, energetic, trustworthy, polite, creative, honest, punctual.

  • Flexible, creative, doer who is willing to try anything.

  • Ability to communicate effectively with diverse groups of all abilities.

  • Ability to work in a variety of locations throughout Connecticut

  • Desire to make a difference in the lives of adults with disabilities.


Preferred Skills:



  • Ability to demonstrate respect and cultural awareness.

  • Great motivator with outgoing/positive personality

  • Ability to work directly with disabled individuals.


Physical Demands:



  • Assisting with Mobility: Helping individuals move, lift, or transfer, including wheelchair assistance.

  • Positioning and Transfers: Lifting, bending, or supporting individuals during transfers, such as getting in/out of vehicles or from chair to standing position.

  • Physical Activities: Engaging in activities like walking, exercise, or recreational events, requiring stamina and attentiveness.

  • Personal Care Assistance: May require supporting with daily hygiene tasks (dressing, toileting).

  • Behavioral Response: Reacting to behavioral incidents, requiring physical intervention or safe management.

  • Reasonable accommodations can be provided.


Environmental Demands:



  • Variety of Settings: Working indoors, outdoors, and in different locations (facility, community outings).

  • Vehicle Use: Driving individuals to/from activities, ensuring safety during transit.

  • Changing Work Environment: Adapting to different activities and unexpected situations throughout the day.

  • Safety and Risk Management: Maintaining focus on safety, preventing accidents, and being prepared for emergencies.
