What you'll do:

As the Manufacturing Engineer for Royal Truck Body (A Shyft Group Brand) based at our manufacturing facility in Carson, CA, you will enjoy optimizing manufacturing processes, troubleshooting production problems, and planning and designing manufacturing plant floor layouts to properly locate and co-ordinate equipment and material for efficient production.

You will also be involved with preparing time studies, project planning, project management, budget management and maintaining the systems needed to drive continuous improvement in areas of cost, quality, safety, lead time, and use of working capital.

You will also:

  • Create Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and work instruction revisions
  • Perform time studies for service body and platform body SKUs
  • Examine and correct Bill of Materials (BOM)
  • Evaluate tools and equipment process options that will reduce operational cost
  • Pursue approval for investments in machinery and equipment to improve manufacturing operations
  • Produce engineering drawings and design custom fixturing and tooling
  • Implement lean manufacturing ideas such as visual controls, pull inventory systems, workplace organization, and continuous improvement
  • Provide technical support for production operations, including tooling, fixturing, and process troubleshooting
  • Utilize existing systems and procedures and investigate new technologies, methods, and processes to improve existing operations
  • Monitor and correct safety and ergonomic issues
  • Develop and organize lean events in partnership with the Continuous Improvement team
  • Participate in the WOW (War On Waste) program and assist with implementing WOW events
  • Support the NPI process and evaluate new projects for tooling and equipment needs
  • Drive continuous improvement and eliminate waste in all manufacturing facilities
  • Aide in workstation load balancing for all manufacturing areas
  • Verify, review, and implement torque specifications and high-risk part specifications
  • Track welder certifications and adjust as necessary based on requirements
  • Manage plant and campus layouts including but not limited to production lines and stations, office space, parking lots and warehousing
  • Investigate problems, determine root cause, and implement corrective and preventative actions
  • Collaborate with quality, engineering, production, materials, and purchasing to resolve issues
  • Keep abreast of developments in the manufacturing field through reading current literature, talking with colleagues, participating in educational programs, attending workshops, and participating in professional organizations and conferences
  • Institute Kan Ban replenishment systems within the shop just-in0time inventory
  • Aide with parts presentation at work centers
  • Provide insight for packaging to branches to mitigate shipping damages of bodies
  • Visit branches as needed to assist inefficiencies and CAPEX investment

Qualifications:


  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Industrial Engineering, or a related discipline, or equivalent combination of education and manufacturing engineering experience
  • Five or more (5+) years of manufacturing engineering experience
  • Experience working in a low volume/high variation manufacturing operation
  • A history of handling multiple projects, meeting deadlines, and managing and maintaining budgets
  • Proficiency in Microsoft 365, particularly Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Project
  • Expertise in utilizing computer-aided design systems (SolidWorks and AutoCAD preferred)
  • Solid hands-on engineering skills and the ability to work on production equipment
  • Sound judgment with the ability to make timely, and sometimes difficult decisions
  • Ability to work with some direction and be effective in a fast-paced environment
  • Versatility, flexibility, and willingness to succeed within constantly changing priorities
  • Knowledge of Standard Production Sequence (SPS) and core procedures
