Position Summary:

The Environmental Health Technician (EHT) will work with UW Oshkosh staff embedded with the Vilas County Public Health Department as an environmental health professional. The Technician will perform environmental health inspections and well water testing throughout Vilas County as part of the contractual relationship between the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh and the county. The EHT will interact with community members, facility owners, colleagues, and the public to further the mission of the Vilas County Health Department. The EHT will also assist in the management of the on-site lab and help with the training and mentoring of student interns. Vehicles will be provided for most travel. Start date is flexible and can be negotiated with the successful candidate. The position is based in Eagle River, WI.

This project appointment has an anticipated duration of one (1) year. However, due to changes in the budget, project scope, etc., this end date could change. According to UW System Administrative Policy 1256, this project appointment cannot extend past 4 years from the hire date. This position may be converted to a position with the expectation of continued employment in the future.

Responsibilities

  • Collect, document, and transport water and other environmental samples
  • Prepares equipment and samples for laboratory tests
  • Conduct field inspections of various types of facilities
  • Keeps detailed records and assesses test data to maintain highest quality of service and performance
  • Ensures equipment is properly calibrated and maintained according to professional standards and conduct tests
  • Conducts, reads, and interprets test results
  • Communicates results, feedback, or suggestions; and discusses trends, procedural questions, and concerns
  • May verify code and regulatory compliance using knowledge of local, state, and federal rules and regulations related to public health
  • May investigate complaints as directed
  • May train and/or mentor student interns
  • Other duties as assigned


Qualifications
Required:

  • Associate's degree or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Demonstrated ability to accurately record data
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Demonstrated ability to manage and maintain timely work schedules
  • Must have a valid driver's license and the ability to become authorized to drive a university vehicle at the time of appointment
  • Commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion


Preferred:

  • One (1) or more years of field testing or laboratory experience
  • Experience working with a variety of environmental health inspection or well water sampling and analysis techniques
