The Position

Portland Airport Fire & Rescue is opening the testing process for our Firefighter Entry eligibility list.

Port of Portland Employment Application : To be considered for employment with the Port of Portland Fire Department, candidates must complete the Port of Portland's employment application by visiting our website: www.portofportland.com . Please ensure your application reflects all relevant education and experience, as incomplete applications may be rejected. Resumes are not a substitute for incomplete or partially completed applications.

FireTEAM Exam: Applicants are required to take the FireTEAM written exam and complete a Port of Portland employment application to be considered. It is the applicants responsibility to schedule the required FireTEAM written exam with the National Testing Network (NTN) at www.NationalTestingNetwork.com. Note: you must indicate to SHARE YOUR SCORES with the Port of Portland for consideration.

A passing score on the Fire TEAM written exam is required for candidates to advance in the selection process. All testing must be completed by 11:59 p.m. on March 31, 2025.

Scored Application Review: Applications will be reviewed and scored against a pre-established list of criteria. A cut-off score will be established and passing scores will advance to the next evaluation step.

Oral Board Interview: Candidates will be scored on their performance in the oral board which will be the final determination of ranking on the Eligibility List.

Ranking and Placement on Eligibility List: Candidates who successfully pass all phases of the outlined process will be ranked and placed on the hiring Eligibility List. Email notification will be sent to each candidate on the list notifying them where they rank.

Testing Information:

Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT): A valid CPAT certification is required at time of hire. We will accept current CPAT certifications from other certifiable agencies.

SALARY INFORMATION AND WORK SCHEDULE:


The fire department currently has six pay steps for firefighters, based on years of continuous service in the position of Firefighter. Starting salary is currently $78,204.42, and top step is currently $99,810.86. Members who successfully complete probation shall receive:
  • 10% Paramedic Pay
  • 6.0% Apparatus Operator Pay
  • Eligible for up to 2.0% certification pay

Work Schedule: Portland Airport Fire & Rescue works a 24 hour on, 48 hours off rotating shifts.
  • Members receive a Kelly day every 9th shift, resulting in a 49.95-hour work week

Essential Job Duties

  • Respond to all alarms for Crash/Fire/Rescue/First Aid:
    • Combats fires, removes victims from aircraft, building, autos and administers first aid and other emergency support care, per Multnomah County protocols.
    • Drives and effectively operates all crash/fire/rescue (ARFF) vehicles.
    • Responds to all alarms for aircraft, structural, and medical emergencies as directed by the Shift Lieutenant, Captain or Battalion Chief.
    • Responds to mutual aid emergency service requests as directed by the Shift Lieutenant, Captain or Battalion Chief.
    • Effectively implements medical operations during mass casualty incidents.
  • Performs pre-fire inspections:
    • Building, extinguisher, hydrant and AED's.
    • Daily routine house duties.
    • Vehicle preventive maintenance and inspections.
    • Other duties assigned by the Shift Battalion Chief, Captain or Lieutenant.
  • Participates in and conducts all phases of training as set forth in Fire Department Training Programs.
  • May coordinate work efforts and supervise personnel in emergency and non-emergency situations upon direction or assignment by the Shift Battalion Chief, Captain, or Lieutenant.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the Fire Chief, Assistant Chief, Shift Battalion Chief, Captain or Lieutenant of the Airport Fire Department.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent is required.
  • EMT-B certification at time of hire is required.
  • Valid Candidate Physical Agility Test (CPAT) certification at time of hire is required.
  • Possess combination of physical strength and stamina required to perform all fire department physical performance expectations.
  • Must be able to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Must be 18 years of age at time of hire.
  • Valid driver's license.
Ability to:
  • Pass a comprehensive background check, psychological evaluation, post-offer drug test, and medical examination.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain security clearance for unescorted access to secured areas of the airport.
  • Work efficiently in complex environments under adverse conditions with shifting priorities.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with colleagues, supervisors, stakeholders, and the public.
  • Solve problems effectively under high-pressure circumstances while adhering to policies and procedures.
  • Promote safety as a guiding principle in all work practices.
  • Demonstrate teamwork and respect for others.
  • Write comprehensive and confidential reports as assigned.
  • Apply basic math skills.
  • Perform minor maintenance on vehicles and emergency equipment.
  • Maintain current knowledge of firefighting industry procedures and techniques.
  • Perform all emergency Aircraft Rescue & Fire Fighting and EMS functions as outlined by department procedures.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • A degree in fire science or related field (preferred).
  • Demonstrated experience with aircraft, firefighting, rescue, and/or emergency medical services (EMS) operations (preferred).
  • Bilingual communication skills (preferred).

SELECTION PROCESS (tentative schedule):

The selection process includes a Scored Application Review, followed by a Scored Oral Board Interview for qualified candidates. Based on these results, candidates will be ranked and placed on the Eligibility List.
