Minimum Qualifications
Requires technical knowledge in the field acquired through an apprenticeship, a 2-year degree, or professional certificate. Please contact your Human Resources office for an evaluation of education/experience in lieu of the required minimum qualifications.
Preferred Qualifications
-Active Licensed Veterinary Technician in the State of Georgia or ability to transfer qualified licensure from another applicable state.
-Experience working within an Orthopedic area of a veterinary hospital or private veterinary specialty clinic.
Position Summary
The University of Georgia College of Veterinary Medicine teaching hospital is seeking a licensed veterinary technician to join our Orthopedics service. We strive to provide advanced veterinary medicine to our patients. The LVT in the Orthopedics service area works with small animal patients who are in the hospital from an emergent health issue, or planned visit. Duties expected will include diagnostic imaging (radiography, CT scanning), execute pre-, peri-, and post-operative care for surgical patients, monitor patients under anesthesia, monitoring, assist in maintaining surgical suite and equipment before, during and after surgery, provide proper physical restraint to allow for safe handling of patients, instruct and supervise students in proper clinical techniques to support patient care, keep patients cleaned and groomed, place and maintain IV catheters, administer and monitor patient diets as prescribed by the clinician, exercise patients as prescribed, collect or assist with the collection of the patient's blood, urine, and tissue samples, properly submits patient's blood, urine, and tissue samples for analysis, assist with and instruct students in performing proper physical examinations and diagnostic procedures, properly medicate patients as directed by the clinician, teach students proper patient restraint for safe handling of patients, serve in an advanced role in patient care and client communication, display a willingness to guide, mentor, and support faculty, residents, interns, and fellow team members with instruction.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and/or Competencies

  • Graduation from an accredited Veterinary Technician program and passing the VTNE with ability to obtain and LVT license in the state of Georgia within 6 months of employment.
  • Experience properly handling animals.
  • Capable of dealing with stressful situations
  • Perform phlebotomy on animals
  • Manually calculating basic formulas for weight conversions, medication dose conversions
  • Knowledge of animal anatomy

Physical Demands

  • Lift and carry up to 50 pounds.
  • Sit, stand, stoop, bend and walk intermittently during the day on hard floor surfaces.
  • Use of manual dexterity sufficient to accurately work with small, delicate pieces of equipment or large heavy objects/containers/machinery.
  • Wearing all protective gear including mask, gloves, gown, hairnet, safety goggles etc.
  • Working for long periods of time with arms extended.

Attend and provide in-put during patient rounds, organize receiving schedule, complete patient status reports, perform daily client call-backs, perform technician appointments, assist with patient receiving, perform or assist with specimen collection, enter VETVIEW requests, service input, communications and charges, provide sedation and assistance to radiology to expedite patient imaging, communicate surgical cases with anesthesia, call in RX refills, obtain lab results, keep up with the status of the patient's bill, the estimate and the deposit, field consults, messages, questions, and calls for the clinicians.

Technical duties are the following: patient physical assessment, catheterize, phlebotomy, cystocentesis, injections, medicating, administer I.V. fluids, above mentioned technical tasks relating to receiving, surgery, patient care, sedation and anesthesia.
Performing sedation, analgesia and anesthesia. Administration, monitoring and recovering patients with sedative, analgesic and anesthetic agents; competently calculate drug dosages, reconstitute and administer drugs including controlled substances, have clear knowledge and understanding of the adverse effects and complications and be able to respond and react adeptly to life threatening situations and assist with cardiopulmonary resuscitation.

Duties/Responsibilities
Pre-Post Surgical Patient treatment and care. Clipping, prepping, flushing, bandaging, casting, wound care, suture/staple placement and removal, scrubbing in/OR circulating , administer medications, provide pain management and perform laboratory procedures. Competently perform and assess specimen samples with various types of equipment and testing kits ( NOVA, Blood Gas, PCV, TS, BG, Azo, Cross Match, Blood Type, Cytology, FeLV, FIV, Parvo, etc). The technician will be responsible for maintaining proper medical records for patients. These will include the summary of procedures performed as well as notation as to client contact. The technician will be responsible for tracking and documenting long term therapeutic outcomes of various treatments.
