General Statement of Job
Under regular supervision, performs specialized work in planning, organizing and directing camp site and activities for seasonal camp programs. Work is performed under the supervision of the Camp Director and/or Recreation & Leisure Services Supervisor.
Essential Functions:
Assists in the planning and organization of all aspects of day camp operation for assigned site.
Assists in the training, supervision and evaluation of camp counselors, CITs and volunteers.
Prepares and coordinates daily curriculum including crafts, sports, games, drama, nature awareness, field trips, speakers and other socialization activities according to lesson plans.
Implements age and developmentally appropriate activities. Conducts programs in an orderly fashion maintaining discipline and good conduct from the participants.
Greets participants and visitors and distributes accurate information regarding trips and activities.
Maintains open and positive communication with all staff, campers, parents and school sites.
Maintains accurate administrative records including but not limited to, staff timesheets, daily attendance, participant emergency information, accident/injury reports, behavior reports, lunch counts, newsletters, permission slips and medication logs.
Maintains inventory of materials/supplies/equipment and submits supply needs in advance.
Enforces rules and regulations to ensure safety of participants.
Maintains neatness and cleanliness of activity areas. Administer basic first aid as needed.
Administers basic first aid as needed.
Performs related duties as required.
Minimum Training and Experience
Must be at least eighteen (18) years of age. Requires an associate's degree in recreation, education or related field supplemented by one to two years experience working in recreation, camp or child care setting. Bachelor's degree preferred. Must possess or have the ability to obtain within 1 month of hire; CPR/AED/First Aid certifications. Must possess and maintain a valid State of Florida Driver's License. Must possess or obtain the most current FEMA 100, 200, and 700 Incident Command System certifications within 6 months of appointment to the job.
Minimum Standards and Qualifications Required
Knowledge of Job: Has thorough knowledge of the methods, procedures and policies of the Parks and Recreation Department as they pertain to the performance of duties of the Camp Assistant Director. Is knowledgeable in the laws, ordinances, standards and regulations pertaining to the specific duties and responsibilities of the position. Has knowledge in the areas of sports/recreation programming, event organization and implementation, etc. Is able to make sound, educated decisions. Is able to supervise and evaluate the work of others. Has the ability to offer instruction and advice to subordinates regarding departmental policies, methods and regulations. Is able to perform employee evaluations and to make recommendations based on results. Has the ability to offer training and assistance to co-workers and employees of other departments as required. Is able to take the initiative to complete the duties of the position without the need of direct supervision. Has the ability to learn and utilize new skills and information to improve job performance and efficiency. Is able to read and interpret complex materials pertaining to the responsibilities of the job. Is able to prepare simple reports and records. Has knowledge of the terminology used within the department. Knows how to maintain effective relationships with personnel of other departments, professionals and members of the public through contact and cooperation.
Has the ability to communicate professionally in confrontational situations. Has thorough knowledge of proper English usage. Has thorough knowledge of modern office practices and technology. Has knowledge of and skill in the use of computers for data and word processing. Has knowledge of the standard equipment, tools, materials and practices of the industry. Physical Requirements: Must be physically able to operate a variety of machines and equipment including a computer, basic office equipment, telephone, fitness/sports equipment, sound equipment, etc. Tasks involve the ability to exert moderate, though not constant, physical effort, typically involving some combination of climbing and balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching and crawling, and which may involve some lifting, carrying, pushing and pulling of objects and materials of moderate weight (12-20 pounds) to moderately heavy weight(up to 50 pounds). Must be able to swim. Routinely works in outside weather conditions.
Language Ability: Requires ability to read a variety of policy and procedure manuals, technical manuals, budget documents, fitness manuals, etc. Requires the ability to prepare reports, records, correspondence, etc., with proper format. Requires the ability to speak with and before others with poise, voice control and confidence. Requires the ability to record and deliver information, to explain procedures, to follow and give verbal and written instructions; to counsel and teach employees. Must be able to communicate effectively and efficiently. Requires the ability to talk and hear: (talking: expressing or exchanging ideas by means of spoken words; hearing: perceiving nature of sounds by ear). Noise level in work environment is generally loud.
