Salary Range $90,580 - $100,000
Primary Purpose of Department
The UNC Charlotte Environmental Health and Safety office implements policies, procedures and programs designed to protect people, property, and the environment. The Environmental Health and Safety office promotes a culture of safety by advancing adherence to environmental protection and occupational health and safety compliance regulations.
Primary Purpose of Position
The primary purpose of this position is to research, develop, implement, analyze and continuously improve the Environmental Health and Safety program.
Summary of Position Responsibilities
The responsibilities of the position include:
Management and coordination of all aspects of the occupational safety and health compliance programs including, but not limited to:

  • Injury and illness prevention
  • Job hazard analysis
  • Hearing conservation
  • Indoor air quality
  • Industrial hygiene
  • Personal protective equipment
  • Respiratory protection
  • Medical surveillance
  • Confined space
  • Lockout/tagout
  • Electrical safety
  • Machine guarding


Specific responsibilities include, but not limited

  • Program development.
  • Consultation.
  • Training.
  • Hazard assessments.
  • Inspections.
  • Audits.
  • Investigations.
  • Record-keeping.
  • Long-term goals.
  • Supervision.
  • Incident response and coordinating.

  • OSHA compliance with various stakeholders.

Minimum Education/Experience
Bachelor's degree and two years of related experience; or Master's degree in a physical science, biological science, environmental science/engineering, occupational safety, industrial technology or related discipline; or equivalent combination of training and experience.
All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.
Some positions may require additional training or licensure.
Preferred Education, Knowledge, Skills and Experience

  • A Master's degree in business administration, public administration, management, physical science, biological science, environmental science/engineering, occupational safety, industrial technology, or related discipline.
  • Relevant professional certification (e.g., CSP, CIH, ARM, etc.).
  • Seven or more years of demonstrated health and safety program development, leadership, and communication skills equal to the requirements of the position.
  • Experience with establishing a health and safety management system in a higher education or public setting.
  • Experience using technology to automate processes and manage projects.
  • Demonstrated leadership, communication, and team building skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to investigate complex incidents, determine root causes and gain University administrators support to implement remedial actions.

Necessary Certifications/Licenses
Preferred Certifications/Licenses

  • Accreditation as a Associate Safety Professional (ASP), Certified Safety Professional (CSP) or Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH).
