Description

The Department of Cinema seeks to fill a full-time, one-year Visiting Assistant Professor position to begin in the fall of 2025.

The teaching load is six courses per year and all courses have enrollments of 18 or fewer. Responsibilities include teaching all aspects of motion-picture production, from conception through post-production, at introductory through advanced levels, as well as short-film screenwriting for both cinema majors and non-majors.

With an emphasis on active learning, Denison is an undergraduate institution whose central focus is the education of our students. The successful candidate must be able to teach screenwriting and all aspects of film/digital production and in a residential liberal arts environment.

The Department of Cinema is part of the University's Division of Fine Arts. As such, our curriculum emphasizes artistry and conceptual sophistication as much as technical craft. The department's overall curriculum integrates film/digital production and cinema studies, and actively encourages students to draw connections between the two.

Each course in our core production sequence encompasses the entire filmmaking process rather than focusing on a specific role or phase of motion picture production. This fosters a mindset whereby students think of their work in terms of overarching artistic vision rather than technical specialization, while allowing them to explore specific areas of motion picture production, which they might pursue further after graduation.

Candidates must possess an MFA and be able to teach Adobe Premiere.

To be assured full consideration, candidates should visit https://employment.denison.edu and submit: a cover letter; curriculum vitae; graduate school transcript; a screenwriting sample as well as examples of motion-picture production work (via links to Vimeo, personal website, etc.); sample course syllabi; and the names and contact information of three academic references, who the University will contact to submit letters of recommendation. In your cover letter, please discuss the specifics of your teaching experience and address your potential to foster diverse perspectives among students, faculty, and the campus community.

Completed application materials submitted by February 28th, 2025 will receive full consideration. Review of application materials will continue until the position is filled.
