Job Summary

The successful candidate will work to prepare and analyze omics data generated within the lab and beyond. Most work will focus on bulk and single-cell gene expression data from normal and cancerous human samples, but this may grow over time to include other organisms and molecular species.

Familiarity with the R programming environment is required, and knowledge of other programming languages (e.g., Python), workflow development languages (e.g., Snakemake, WDL, and Nextflow), and collaborative coding practices (e.g., GitHub) is a plus.

Responsibilities will primarily involve application of existing code, with some development of new code as needed.

Under direct supervision, this individual will preprocess and perform quality control of omics datasets, execute the lab's analytical pipelines, and prepare these outputs for ingestion into a cloud-based data ecosystem. Additionally, this individual will have the opportunity to contribute to original analyses of omics data and serve as co-author on resulting publications. This is an entry-level role that is ideal for for someone who is looking to gain at least two years of intensive computational biology research experience before applying to graduate school.

Under direct supervision, acquires skills and knowledge of professional concepts in research data analysis. Works on small projects or segments of projects with limited scope and complexity.

The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy.

Your placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF. For positions that are represented by a labor union, placement within the salary range will be guided by the rules in the collective bargaining agreement.

The salary range for this position is $61,200 - $77,700 (Annual Rate).

Department Description

The Department of Neurological Surgery at UCSF is consistently ranked among the best in the world. The Brain Tumor Center (a unit within the Department of Neurological Surgery) is an outstanding collaborative environment where clinicians and basic scientists work closely together to unravel the biology of brain tumors and develop new treatments. The Brain Tumor Center is physically located on the 4th floor of the Helen Diller Family Cancer Research Building at Mission Bay, which is the epicenter of cancer research at UCSF.

Required Qualifications


  • Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.
  • Basic knowledge of R programming
  • Acquiring knowledge of research function. Acquiring ability to perform research analysis duties.
  • Ability to effectively manage time and see assigned parts of projects through to completion on deadline.Working skills in analysis and consultation.
  • Basic consultation and communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications


  • Acquiring statistical analysis, systems programming, and database design skills to perform research analysis duties.
  • Familiarity with analysis of gene expression data including gene coexpression analysis
  • Previous experience conducting bioinformatic research in an academic laboratory environment
  • Familiarity with workflow development languages (e.g. Snakemake, WDL, NextFlow)
  • Familiarity with collaborative coding practices (e.g. GitHub)
