1st Class Corrosion Control Technician
Purpose:
Colonna's Shipyard is seeking 1
st Class Corrosion Control Technicians to support day shift operations in our Shipyard in Norfolk, VA.
Job Description:
- Prepare all types of surfaces for preservation.
- Mix and apply epoxy and enamel paints.
- Read job specifications and complete the job accordingly.
- Complete work within the requirements of NAVSEA Standard Item 009-32.
- Remove old paint and debris from all types of substrates by scraping, chipping and sanding.
- Operate; 3,000 to 5,000PSI Pressure Washers and wash surfaces to remove grease, rust, scale, and dirt.
- Operate 40,000PSI Ultra-High Pressure Water Jetting equipment.
- Mix Solvents and Coatings accurately to formula.
- Apply coatings in accordance with specifications and good marine practice.
- Brush and roll painting to pass all inspection processes.
- Exercise proper procedures for; painting in confined spaces
- Supervise and train, when applicable, department employees and/or other assigned crew members.
- Control costs in assigned area of responsibility.
- Complete tasks with little to no supervision
- Other duties may be assigned as workload requirements dictate.
- Surface preparation and coating application in accordance with SSPC-SP-1, SP-2, SP-3, SP-5, SP-6, SP-10, SP-11 and SP-12.
- Surface Preparation to include:
- Solvent Cleaning; hand tool cleaning; power tool cleaning; abrasive blasting; ultra-high-pressure water-jetting
- Coatings Application:
- Mixing of coatings to proper ratio
- Brush & Roll paint application to required film thickness.
- Masking and protection of surrounding and adjacent areas
- Application of coatings using airless spray equipment
- Environmental Protection:
- Install & Maintain containment for all fugitive emissions (Includes: Wash Water, Paint Overspray, Abrasive Blasting Dust, etc.)
- Equipment; Set-up, Operation, and Breakdown:
- Pressure washer (3500-5000 PSI)
- Abrasive blasting pots
- Airless spray paint pumps
- 40,000 PSI UHP Blast Equipment
- Inspection and Testing on:
- Wet Film Thickness readings
- Surface Preparation Inspections using appropriate calibrated equipment.
- Coatings Inspections using appropriate calibrated equipment.
Qualifications:
- Must have at least seven (7) years' experience with accomplishing Corrosion Control and Preservation in the Marine Industry.
- Must have basic levels of mathematical, reading, writing and communication skills necessary to successfully accomplish the job description, skills and ability requirements as outlined above.
- Must have visual acuity necessary and appropriate to perform all job duties and requirements as listed.
- Must have auditory acuity capable of hearing a forklift back-up alarm, moving vehicle horns, or other safety alarms and warning signals.
- Must be able to work all shifts, overtime and weekends.
- Must have regular, reliable attendance.
- Must have at least one of the following of the following certifications:
- C-13 Ultra-High-Pressure Water-Jetter Certification
- C-12 (Airless Spray Applicator)
- C-7 (Abrasive Blaster) Certification
Desired Qualifications:
- Eligible for DBIDS would be a plus.
- Coatings Application Specialist Level II Certification preferred.
- Prior experience supporting Colonna's Shipyard, its division, and affiliates, with corrosion control efforts is highly preferred.
Travel Requirements:
- Minimal Travel; 10% or less.
Physical Requirements:
- Must be able to lift, carry and transport heavy equipment and boxes. The exact weight requirements will be determined by the specific job, but no less than 20 lbs.
- Must be physically agile to perform tasks in naval ships. Able to work on and climb ladders, work in extreme temperature environments, aboard ships, in shipyards, under industrial conditions and in confined spaces, including enter and moving through manholes.
- May ride ships at sea for extended periods
- Able to perform other duties as required which may involve high heat, humidity, noise, and dirty conditions, working aloft or over the sides of vessels.
- Frequent exposure to noise due to machinery and equipment.
- Employee is required to operate trucks, forklifts & man-lifts.
- While performing the duties of this job, you may frequently be required to stand, walk & sit; use hands or fingers; handle or feel; talk and hear. Occasionally required to reach with hands and arms, climb and balance, stoop, squat, kneel, twist and crawl.
- Work in extreme temperatures and conditions. At times you will work in areas that have less adequate ventilation
- Frequent use of respirator.
- Protective clothing or equipment and face shields or goggles shall be worn when welding, cutting, or working with molten metal.
