Introduction

MWRD's Internship Program offers paid internship positions. While the main focus is on wastewater management, there are opportunities to gain knowledge and practical experience in a wide range of functions in each department.

Paid Interns

Paid interns are limited to 119 working days per calendar year and receive $18.00 per hour. They do not receive benefits or paid days off.

Required Documents:



  • Letter of recommendation from a class instructor, professor, or Internship Coordinator from current school or university.
  • Cover letter stating interest in position.
  • Resume.


Eligibility Requirements



  • Currently enrolled in a degree-seeking program in an accredited college or university and will be enrolled in the 2025/2026 school year.
  • Permanent residency within the territorial boundaries of the MWRD (students may attend school outside the territorial boundaries).
  • You must be a citizen or national of the United States, or an individual who is otherwise legally authorized to work in the United States.


Candidates are required to submit the Online Internship Application, cover letter, resume and letter of recommendation through MWRD's Online Employment Center.

Description:

The Metropolitan Water Reclamation District is seeking an intern to serve under the supervision of an Illinois licensed professional engineer, the intern will create GIS layers related to new Watershed Management Ordinance (WMO) permits, conduct mapping research related to previously issued WMO permits, and verify the accuracy of existing ArcGIS polygons.



  • Assist with permit intake process by pre-vetting site development engineering plan sets.
  • Attend pre-application meetings and be responsible for note taking.
  • Assist with populating blank database fields for permits.
  • Assist with scanning permit documents and adding them to the permit archive.
  • Assist with permit records inventory and organization.
  • The intern will need to report to MOBA and to SWRP depending on work needs but will be a 7-hour/day employee.



Minimum Qualifications and Requirements:




  • Training and experience with ESRI ArcGIS preferred.
  • Basic understanding of civil engineering, topography, and sewer systems.
  • Experience with Microsoft Office Software.
  • Familiarity with civil site plans, such as grading plans, sewer atlas, or plan and profile.
