TITLE

Full-stack Web Application Engineer

JOB SUMMARY

The Full-stack Web Application Engineer is accountable for supporting the university's enterprise applications, including on-premises, custom written, and cloud-based applications. This position will conduct comprehensive system analysis, designing, coding, testing, and deploying applications along with their customizations, enhancements, workflows, and any integrations. The Full-stack Web Application Engineer is responsible for general system maintenance, troubleshooting, and support. The Full-stack Web Application Engineer is expected to contribute to and help guide the university's enterprise application architecture and serve as a mentor and technical leader for their team. As a member of the IT Solutions (ITS) team, the Full-stack Web Application Engineer is expected to align with the division's mission to "empower an agile, digital university and elevate technology as a strategic institutional asset," and to contribute positively to a collaborative, human-centered, innovative, accountable, transparent, and inclusive culture within ITS.

ORGANIZATIONAL RELATIONSHIPS

Reports to: Depending on domain expertise Associate Director of Integration, Analytics & Web
Services; Manager of Business Applications; or Senior Manager of Student-
Centered Applications

Supervises: No supervisory responsibilities

ESSENTIAL DUTIES - May include, but not limited to the following:

Application Development and Support (90%)

*Utilize accepted application development and project-planning methodologies, incorporating front-end and back-end development skills, to design, develop, test, implement, maintain, and support the university's major enterprise information systems, interfaces, and related applications.

*Assist in the evaluation, selection, and implementation of new software systems and services, including cloud-based solutions, ensuring alignment with modern full-stack development practices.

*Collaborate with university partners to develop and/or review functional requirements, proposing technical solutions that optimize software capabilities, enhance process efficiency, and elevate user experience, adhering to UI/UX design principles.

*Develops and maintains system design and specification documents, Functional and technical documents, administrative documentation, and/or user documentation interacting with other cross-functional teams.

*Provides training to users and technical support staff, as appropriate.

*Participates in system testing during software and infrastructure upgrade cycles, following test plans and documenting results.

*Performs routine system administration tasks as needed, including monitoring operations and performance.

*Provides high quality and timely application support, including responding to incident/ problem tickets and troubleshooting errors and issues with university enterprise systems.

*Works closely with product experience owners and project managers through all phases of software development lifecycle (SDLC) to ensure user experience design methodologies are included in software development.

*Serves as a liaison between system users and vendors to manage issues through to final resolution.

Participation & Support (10%)



  1. Maintains awareness of current practices and future trends in enterprise application architecture, agile methodologies, and application development technology and best practices.
  2. Represents IT Solutions and participates in the campus community by serving on working groups, project teams, and university committees.
  3. Performs other duties as assigned.


EDUCATION

Bachelor's degree required. Additional job-related experience may substitute for the required education on a year-for-year basis.

EXPERIENCE

Minimum seven years of relevant experience in application development (web and/or enterprise applications). Additional job-related education may substitute for the required experience on a year-for-year basis.

REQUIREMENT

Regular and reliable attendance at the University during regular scheduled days and work hours is an essential function of this position.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES - The following are essential:

Front-end Development



  1. Skill in HTML5, CSS3, and JavaScript: Foundational web technologies essential for constructing user interfaces.
  2. Ability to develop responsive web applications that dynamically adjust to various screen sizes and devices.
  3. Skill in popular front-end frameworks like React.js, Angular, or Vue.js for crafting interactive and responsive user interfaces.
  4. Knowledge of Terminalfour or other Content Management System for higher-ed.
  5. Knowledge of user experience design (UI/UX) and usability principles to create intuitive and engaging interfaces.
  6. Knowledge of accessibility standards and best practices to ensure web applications are inclusive and usable by individuals with disabilities.


Back-end Development



  1. Knowledge of object-oriented design principles and architectures (C# or Java).
  2. Skill in developing and maintaining applications in more than one of the following Server-side Languages: Web application development using .Net Framework, ASP.NET, Classic ASP, C#, Java, Node.js.
  3. Mobile application development abilities.
  4. Knowledge of application/Software-as-a-Service development (SaaS)
  5. In-depth knowledge and experience in Relational database concepts and design principles, (e.g., SQL Server, MySQL, PostgreSQL) and hands-on development experience using SQL, PL/SQL, and/or NoSQL.
  6. Knowledge of relational databases (e.g., SQL Server, MySQL, PostgreSQL) and knowledge in database design principles to ensure efficient data storage and retrieval.
  7. Knowledge and exposure to Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) system(s), such as Oracle Fusion Cloud Applications, Ellucian Colleague.
  8. Skill in collaborating with other developers using version control tools (e.g. Git, GitlLab, Bit Bucket. Azure DevOps.)
  9. Strong working knowledge of the software development lifecycle (SDLC) and on project management methodologies (e.g., Waterfall, Agile)
  10. Strong written and oral communication skills (including ability to present ideas in user- friendly, business-friendly and technical language) and interpersonal skills with a focus on rapport-building, listening and questioning skills.
  11. Proven analytical and problem-solving abilities, including ability to anticipate, identify, and solve critical problems.
  12. Ability to build effective relationships and strong commitment to working collegially and collaboratively with constituents at all levels in a diverse and distributed environment.
  13. Ability to use a personal computer and other office equipment, including related university software and email.


Additional/Desirable Skills & Abilities



  1. Skill in designing, developing and consuming APIs to facilitate communication between various systems.
  2. Knowledge or experience with Microsoft Power Platform, PowerApps Formulas, Power Automate (Flow), integrating PowerApss with various data sources, including SharePoint, relational databases, ERP.
  3. Knowledge of Unix and/or Linux operating systems, including the file system and basic commands and utilities.
  4. Knowledge of Authentication methods (e.g., OAuth, JWT) and authorization techniques to secure web applications.
  5. Deep knowledge of issues surrounding data security and best practices for balancing availability with security.
  6. Ability to thrive in a higher education setting.
  7. Knowledge of Texas Administrative Code (TAC 202).
