The Facilities Management Department at the University of Virginia has an exciting opportunity to join their Elevator team as an Elevator Assistant Mechanic. Facilities Management (FM) supports the University of Virginia's wide range of research, academic and patient care programs. With over 1,200 employees dedicated to excellence, Facilities Management is responsible for the day-to-day operation, repair and maintenance of UVA's buildings, infrastructure and grounds as well as other University-owned and leased properties. Position Summary: Elevator Assistant Mechanics provide technical support in the repair and maintenance of electrical and mechanical equipment related to elevators, dumbwaiters, wheelchair lifts and other hydraulic or electric lift devices. They assist Elevator Mechanics on all elevator equipment at the University per established standards while learning the trade. Elevator Assistant Mechanics are provided guidance and on the job training from Elevator Mechanics in elevator maintenance and repair. Assistants work under direct supervision but must demonstrate the ability to perform tasks with increasing independence. In order to help foster a safe work environment, Incumbents will comply with OSHA, federal, state, and local regulations while supporting safe vertical transportation of students, staff, patients and visitors throughout the University. The Elevator Assistant Mechanic is a role that is designed to develop credentialed Elevator Mechanics.The Elevator Assistant Mechanic shall complete the four-year CET Training Curriculum that is provided by the department, which is a combination of on-the-job training and 12 courses of home-based study. Interim milestones for demonstrable progress on skills development will also be provided. Continued employment as an Elevator Assistant Mechanic is contingent upon meeting those milestones. Elevator Assistant Mechanics must complete all assigned/required training modules and pass CET examination within the first five years of employment or be subject to administrative action per University policies. Compensation: The Anticipated Hiring Range for this position is $25.00 - $30.00 per hour ($52,000 - $62,400 Annually). This is a full-time position with UVA benefits. Employee benefits package highlights include:
Physical Demands: Employee will be required to crawl, kneel, squat, bend and twist in order to perform their work. Employee will work with materials of different weights and perform repetitive motions. Must be comfortable with climbing ladders and working from extreme heights. The employee must have normal vision and hearing (correctable), and for some areas of employment, color vision and sense of smell.
