Job Summary

The Video Producer/Editor within WGCU oversees the planning and execution of public broadcasting programs.

WGCU is Southwest Florida's source for PBS and NPR. A member-supported service of Florida Gulf Coast University, WGCU provides educational programming that inspires, informs and engages our community. Serving all or part of 12 counties in south and Southwest Florida, with five distinct digital TV channels, two FM radio channels, two HD radio channels, and multiple websites, WGCU delivers national and international programming, and develops, produces and delivers relevant, informative and educational local programs to the region.

Job Description

Typical duties may include but are not limited to:

  • Produce, direct and manage all video production.
  • The producer plans program topics in conjunction with the program host, Editors and other newsroom staff.
  • Schedules guests for each program and coordinates all logistics for taping.
  • Assists host with researching topics.
  • Oversees and assists with all show tapings.
  • Edits and produces all final programs for air and on-line.
  • Assists with program promotion both on-line and off the air.
  • Oversees the lighting and audio requirements of selected field, contract, and studio projects.
  • Oversees studio set-ups including sets, lighting and sound.
  • Prepares operating budgets for projects.
  • Serve as essential personnel and provides assistance in the event of an emergency on campus.

Other duties:

  • May supervise student workers, interns, or OPS staff as assigned.
  • Participates in on-air fundraising campaigns.
  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications:

  • This position requires either eight years of directly related full-time experience or, as an alternative, a Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution in an appropriate area of specialization and four years of full-time experience directly related to the job functions.
  • Professional full time experience in television broadcasting.
  • Experience with producing, scripting, and editing long format documentaries.
  • Any appropriate combination of relevant education, experience, and/or certifications may be considered.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master's degree from an accredited institution in an appropriate area of specialization.
  • Two years of professional, full time experience in television broadcasting.
  • Experience using After Effects, Live Type, Motion, and Photoshop.
  • Experience using an HD camera.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Knowledge of public broadcasting industry; awareness of new techniques and practices.
  • Knowledge of policies, procedures, and guidelines established by professional organizations and/or governing agencies.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Skill in current digital audio editing and general desktop software applications.
  • Skilled in researching topics for news and interview broadcasts utilizing various resources.
  • Strong organizational skills and an ability to prioritize and complete simultaneous projects within deadlines.
  • Ability to establish and maintain a good rapport with university faculty, staff, students, and the general public.
  • Ability to adapt quickly to changing situations and environments.
  • Ability to direct live, multi-camera studio productions.
  • Ability to use microphones, portable recording devices, and video studio production equipment.
  • Ability to collaborate and work effectively within a diverse community and willing to contribute to a team effort.
  • Ability to diffuse and respond professionally to stressful situations and difficult people.
  • Ability to thrive in an organization that values the diversity of its student body and workforce and actively promotes an equitable environment.
