The Position:

Under the direction of the Vice President/Area Manager of Construction, the Operations Manager is responsible for all Supervisors and for efficient personnel scheduling, overseeing equipment needs and repair and reinforcement of continuous quality improvement in the area of operations. This includes planning, directing, coordinating, and managing operations within the area. You are also responsible for promoting a culture of safety, ethics, quality, training, diversity and inclusion.

Role and Responsibilities

  • Act as a liaison between Vice President/Area Management team and Operations Management to align company direction, culture and organizational development
  • Leader in promoting safety, training, quality, ethics and productivity within the area
  • Acts as safety leader for field operations, being involved and championing the company safety expectations and programs
  • Works with Project Management staff, Supervisors, Scheduling and Trucking Coordinators, Flagging and Transportation Coordinators to monitor job planning and ensures we are utilizing the resources of labor and equipment efficiently to maximize Production, Quality and Safety goals
  • Track and manage Supervisors' workload including bidding, scheduling, employee management, personnel relations, and training
  • Works with Supervisors throughout Walbec to ensure consistent processes and collaborate on improvement opportunities
  • Primary facilitator of the Crews for Success and Future Foreman programs and involved in Foreman and crew evaluation processes.
  • Works closely with Area Managers, Supervisors and Human Resources on any personnel issues that develop
  • Assist Human Resources in recruitment and hiring of Foreman and field staff
  • Works with Supervisors to develop and implement training for Foreman and field personnel using quality manuals, adhering to best practices guidelines
  • Provides continuous improvement initiatives, analysis of operations, and implements any new processes being developed
  • Understand, to an expert level, the machine operations and automation operations of equipment being utilized on jobs
  • Prioritizes and coordinates with Supervisors, Repair Shop Manager, Foreman, and Mechanics on repair and maintenance of field equipment support. Reviews repair methods, costs, etc.
  • Responsible for evaluating new equipment specifications and directly involved in equipment purchases
  • When appropriate, arranges and monitors Product Demonstration of equipment and provides feedback to Operations group.
  • Has a strong knowledge of state DOT specifications for Construction, Safety and CMV; ensure Technical Services is included appropriately and ensure specifications are met and documented correctly. Works with Technical Services on any problems in field.
  • Perform other related duties as required and assigned

The Candidate:

  • Bachelor's Degree and/or minimum of 6-8 years of experience in construction or manufacturing operations
  • High level knowledge of field construction operations
  • Ability to manage and lead people effectively
  • Flexible and available to interact with employees at all levels
  • Ability to manage multiple conflicting priorities
  • Ability to analyze and interpret financial data
  • Self-directed and motivated
  • Excellent verbal and written communication, conflict management, interpersonal and negotiation skills
  • Valid driver's license and acceptable driving record

Preferred Skills

  • Foreman or Supervisor field experience
  • Equipment knowledge of application, costs, utilization, repairs, and capabilities
  • Excellent personnel management skills
  • Effectively develop and implement new strategies to address operational inefficiencies
  • Initiative to identify and anticipate organizational needs and make recommendations for implementation
