This position has a progression.

PURPOSE STATEMENT:

Performs skilled tasks of average difficulty as a Cylinder Delivery Driver and Fitter's Helper following specific policies/procedures/methods in responding to written/verbal instructions.



Responsibilities

ESSENTIAL FUNCTION/RESPONSIBILITIES:

    Performs all the duties of Cylinder Delivery Driver to include the following:
    • Picks up cylinder delivery invoices, determines daily delivery route, and loads required gas-filled cylinders from loading dock onto truck.
    • Performs pre-delivery trip check on truck following DOT, Company and /or department safety specification; fuels truck, checks truck to ascertain proper equipment are available and truck is in good operating condition.
    • Drives truck to customer premises, unloads cylinders using hydraulic tail gate and delivers cylinders with hand truck to installation site. Disconnects empty cylinders, reconnects filled cylinders, and tests connections with soap and water solution. Relights appliance pilot light and replaces leaking regulators as required.
    • Loads empty cylinders onto truck and returns to the recharging station receiving dock and unloads empty cylinders.
    • Retrieves cylinders as required or necessary.
  • Working as a crew member, performs as an experienced helper in assisting higher grade crewmembers in any and all jobs relating to gas mains and services distribution systems along public rights-of-way up to the meter/regulator set to include the following:
    • The installation, maintenance, relocation, repair, replacement and/or termination of the gas mains and services distribution systems using manual tools of the trade including pick and shovel, and operating various equipment such as jack hammer, pavement breaker, mud gun, pneumatic or gas-powered tampers, drill gun, electric drill, etc.
    • The inspecting, checking and testing of pipe systems with air or gas; reads/interprets pressure gauge to detem1ine system is not leaking and is performing according to design;
    • Drives truck and maintains necessary truck supplies and equipment.
  • Maintains and refills cylinders. Inspects cylinders for serviceability and checks for certification compliance; re inspects and re-stamps cylinders in accordance with NFPA regulations where required.
  • Performs emergency response function as required; effectuates emergency repairs and/or shuts-down gas supply when appropriate/necessary. Stands-by at the site when necessary until properly relieved by appropriate personnel.
  • Provides and extends at all times a courteous and tactful demeanor when dealing with all customers or the public. May advise or instruct consumer in the proper and efficient operation of their appliances/equipment.
  • Performs clerical/administrative duties such as preparing reports, inputting data into the computer, etc.
  • Works in a safe and responsible manner. Complies with and where required enforces all safety rules, regulations and practices in effect and established/adopted by the Company. Cooperates in the fullest in the promotion of safety, safe work habits, and good housekeeping to include the reporting and rectifying, as qualified, any unsafe conditions or act. Maintains all EH&S training on a current basis.

OTHER FUNCTIONS/RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Performs related and other work as required and/or directed.



Qualifications

Required Education and/or Work Experience:

  • Completed all required Department of Transportation (DOT) Federal/State, OSHA Federal/State and NFPA courses or programs. Must maintain at least minimum passing scores per regulations, for all recurring Federal/State and NFPA courses or programs.
  • At least one year progressive and successful experience in the job duties described, based on normal progression.
  • Must be a safe and competent driver, cognizant of all traffic laws and have a clean traffic abstract.
  • Basic knowledge of pertinent codes, regulations, standards, and safety rules such as NFPA #58 and #59 and local plumbing code, in addition to standard practices and procedures.
  • Must have good working knowledge of departmental operating rules and procedures and be proficient in the proper use of the tools, materials, and equipment of the trade.
  • Requires a high degree of mechanical aptitude and a good safety record.
  • Ability to operate a computer with designate d software programs.

Preferred Education and/or Work Experience:

  • Preferably a high school graduate with technical schooling.

Required Licensure, Certification, Registration or Designation:

  • Must possess a valid Class B, CDL license with Hazardous Material endorsement, with no restrictions on air brakes or transmission type, and valid Medical Examiner's Certificate per 49 CFR 391.4 I through 391.49.

Working Conditions/Environment/Physical Demands:

  • Primarily outdoors in all types of weather and field conditions.
  • Degree to which exposed to gas fumes varies from light to an occasionally heavy concentration requiring the use of a gas respirator.
  • Required to work in confined spaces to include trenches, manholes, pits and vaults and at high elevations.
  • Subject to work on weekends, holidays and nights to include emergency call outs.
  • Good physical condition to perform the requirements of the job and maintain certification/qualification/license.
  • No back or serious eye limitation or restriction on respirator use.
  • Must not have acrophobia or claustrophobia. Must be medically classified as a good risk for heavy labor work; work generally involves moderate to heavy degree of physical effort.
