Job Summary

The Athletics Groundskeeper assists in the overall maintenance of the fields and surrounding grounds areas for the Outdoor Athletic Complexes. This position is also responsible for certain common areas around campus as assigned. The Athletics Groundskeeper is actively involved in field preparation and maintenance, equipment maintenance, and facilitation of chemical and fertilizer applications. Supervises a team of part time temporary workers (OPS), including students.

Job Description

Typical duties may include but are not limited to:

  • Assists the Athletics Grounds Superintendent with the planning, coordination, and management of the Athletic Sports Turf Surfaces.
  • Ensures the surrounding grounds around the outdoor athletic facilities are maintained and manicured on a daily basis. Performs and oversees sports turf maintenance tasks such as mowing, edging, weeding, and trimming.
  • Inspects athletics grounds daily to ensure landscaping and grounds keeping services are maintained within standards.
  • Oversees trash and debris facility cleanup.
  • Coordinates irrigation management. Maintains moisture control for grass and clay infield surfaces.
  • Assists in the management of the baseball and softball fields. Maintains and repairs home plate clay and bullpen. Maintains infield skin.
  • Maintains upkeep of grounds equipment.
  • Ensures compliance with University standards regarding waste/recycling collection.
  • Coordinates Chemical and Fertilizer scheduling and application.
  • Leads and coordinates a team of support staff and contracted vendors working to maintain property grounds. Services include but are not limited to fertilization, pesticide, herbicide, irrigation maintenance and repairs, mowing, edging, tree and push pruning, installation of new plants materials, and trash pick-up.
  • Recommends policies and procedures to improve efficiency of operations for Athletics Grounds Maintenance.
  • Ensure all assigned tasks are performed in compliance with University, ASUN Conference, and NCAA rules.
  • Serves as essential personnel and provides assistance in the event of an emergency on campus.

Additional Job Description

Required Qualifications:

  • This position requires a high school diploma and five years of full-time experience directly related to the job functions.
  • Relevant full-time experience in general landscaping or grounds keeping.
  • Experience operating a personal computer and proficient with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint, Publisher, and Outlook).
  • Any appropriate combination of relevant education, experience, and/or certifications may be considered.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with environmental issues (xeriscape technology, South Florida Water Management District (SFWMD) water restrictions, identification of intrusive exotic plants).
  • Prior experience working in facility, turf, or grounds maintenance and familiarity with reel mowers and other necessary grounds equipment.
  • Pesticide and Herbicide Application License.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Extensive knowledge of landscape design, landscaping, horticultural techniques, and environmental issues with an emphasis on wetlands and grounds keeping.
  • Knowledge of applicable safety requirements.
  • Strong organizational skills and an ability to prioritize and complete simultaneous projects within deadlines.
  • Ability to establish and maintain a good rapport with co-workers, university staff, students, vendors, and the general public.
  • Ability to collaborate and work effectively within a diverse community and willing to contribute to a team effort.
  • Ability to manage a budget and work within the constraints of that budget.
  • Ability to effectively plan and delegate the work of others.
  • Ability to manage multiple contractors in various fields related to grounds maintenance.
  • Ability to set standards and supervise contractors and staff within management guidelines.
  • Ability to work 40 hours per week, which includes Monday through Friday, plus game nights; including evenings, weekends, and some holidays.
  • Willing to work outside in extreme temperatures and weather.
  • Ability to lift 60 lbs.
