Senior Compliance Director & University ADA Coordinator

The University of Virginia's Senior Compliance Director & University ADA Coordinator provides leadership to the university in achieving accessibility for the entire community. Serving as the designated ADA Coordinator for the university and housed in the Office for Equal Opportunity and Civil Rights (EOCR), the role provides expert guidance, coordination and direction to the university in its compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act, and other federal and state laws related to accessibility for individuals with disabilities.

The position reports directly to the Associate Vice President for Equal Opportunity & Civil Rights. As part of EOCR's senior leadership team and as the University ADA Coordinator, this role provides a unique opportunity to shape and lead the formation and adherence to policies and processes, as well as proactive efforts and approaches aimed at equal opportunity and access and fulfilling the mission of the office and the broader university.

The position leads the ADA team within EOCR, which also includes the Deputy ADA Coordinator, the Digital Accessibility Coordinator, and a part-time Special Projects Manager. This dynamic and supportive team is dedicated to advancing accessibility and equal access and serves as a resource to the entire university community, as well as its guests, providing information and consultation on access, accommodations processes, and other accessibility-related matters, and providing technical expertise in regard to accessibility in all environments including the physical and built environments and the digital realm. The position will work closely with numerous institutional leaders and guide the team in its work with partner offices including Human Resources, Facilities Management, Student Affairs, IT, Academic Affairs, and more, to address and prevent barriers to accessibility and ensure efforts are strategic and coordinated.

Key Priorities:

• Strategic leadership: oversight of the university's efforts aimed at compliance with the ADA, Section 504 and related laws, as well as broader accessibility efforts; this includes strategic planning and implementation, building and enhancing partnership and collaboration, policy guidance, and ADA team management.
• Responding to Accessibility Barriers: monitor and respond to identified barriers in partnership with other units and areas of the university; identify patterns and trends that need to be addressed and identify steps to proactively prevent and effectively address.
• Outreach and education: lead team in engaging in outreach, education, and training efforts, including identifying opportunities for increased awareness and training for various university constituencies.

Minimum Qualifications:

• Master's degree or relevant terminal degree in law, education, management, public administration, public policy, human resources or other relevant discipline.
• Candidates will have a minimum of ten years of relevant experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Progressive experience in coordinating compliance with ADA and related accessibility laws and regulations.
• Experience applying ADA/504 requirements to achieve accommodations in education/higher education, social services or a public institution.
• Experience working with individuals with disabilities.
• Supervisory experience and experience providing strategic and thoughtful leadership to a team.

• Effectively communicate policies, procedures, and legal concepts in oral and written formats.
• Strong knowledge of and ability to interpret and apply ADA, as well as working understanding of other federal and state equal opportunity and nondiscrimination laws and regulations including Title VI, Title IX, Title VII and other applicable laws.
• Effective project management, organizational and analytical skills.
• Ability to manage confidential and sensitive information.
• Ability to communicate effectively with diverse populations verbally and in writing.
• Ability to maintain neutrality and work under stress.
• Strong skills in the areas of conflict resolution, problem solving techniques.
• Tact, discretion, professionalism, maturity and outstanding interpersonal, and communication skills are required.
• Strong and effective interpersonal skills; the ability to listen well and the ability to both be and project impartiality and establish rapport with a diverse range of community members.
• Possesses a willingness and ability to support a diverse and inclusive campus community.

Salary: Competitive salary commensurate with demonstrated experience. The minimum salary for this role is $140,000.
