About the Role:

Denver Health Medical Center is recruiting for a Neonatologist to join our care team. The ideal candidate will provide outstanding, collaborative clinical care to sick newborns and provide holistic, wraparound care to parents and families. They will lead and mentor a team of neonatal nurses, advanced practice providers, hospitalists, medical students, and residents, fostering a collaborative and educational environment. Lastly, they will participate in or conduct research and/or quality improvement aimed at improving neonatal care and outcomes.

About the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit:

The Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at Denver Health is a Level III NICU with 25 beds, an average of 350-400 admissions each year, and an average daily census of 17. Denver Health delivers more than 3,800 babies each year and has a Level I/II nursery operated by Pediatricians and Neonatologists. Denver Health also has a large pediatric inpatient unit and a thriving Pediatric Intensive Care Unit with pediatric intensivists.

The NICU is supported by four maternal-fetal medicine specialists and a full complement of on-site pediatric subspecialists including surgery, neurosurgery, radiology, anesthesia, and neurology. NICU staff provide clinical services including mechanical ventilation, HFOV, total body cooling, and 24hr video EEG monitoring.

The ideal candidate will have at least 1-3 years of experience and demonstrate commitment to both excellent patient care and clinical education. We have ample opportunities to lecture, perform research, initiate quality improvement projects, and also to collaborate with our local neonatal colleagues. The successful candidate will also have mentoring responsibilities for junior faculty. Essential Functions:

  • Prenatal Consultations
    For high-risk births, meets with the family to explain the situation, provide information about the care their child will receive, and answer any questions the parents may have. (10%)
  • Attendance at High-Risk Deliveries
    Attend high-risk deliveries in order to ensure the baby is born under the best possible circumstances. (10%)
  • Respiratory Therapy
    Provide treatment to help the newborn until they are able to breathe on their own. (20%)
  • Stabilize Fragile Newborns
    Stabilize newborns suffering from life-threatening ailments. Keep moms and babies united until additional treatments can be provided. (20%)
  • Diagnose and Treat Illnesses
    Diagnose and treat various infections, birth defects, and breathing disorders in sick and premature newborns so that they can safely leave the NICU. (20%)
  • Coordinate Neonatal Care Team
    Oversee teams of specialists in caring for many newborns at once. These teams can include neonatal nurse practitioners, registered nurses, respiratory therapists, lactation consultants, and more. (10%)
  • Consult with Other Physicians
    Consult with obstetricians, pediatricians, and family doctors on the treatment of a fragile newborns and work with these colleagues to create a plan to care for the child. (10%)

Education:

  • Doctorate Degree Graduate of an accredited medical school Required

Work Experience:

    Licenses:

    • MD-Physician - State Medical Board Required
    • ACLS-Advanced Cardiac Life Support - AHA - American Heart Association Required
    • NRP-Neonatal Resuscitation Program - AHA - American Heart Association Required
    • PALS-Pediatric Advanced Life Support - AHA - American Heart Association Required
    • BLS-Basic Life Support (BLS/CPR) - AHA - American Heart Association Required

    Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

    • Knowledge of and ability to apply professional medical principles, procedures and techniques.
    • Thorough knowledge of pharmacological agents used in patient treatment.
    • Able to effectively manage and direct medical staff support activities while providing quality medical care.
    • Able to receive detailed information through oral communications; express or exchange ideas by verbal communications.
    • Excellent written and verbal communications, listening, and social skills.
    • Able to interact effectively with people of varied educational, socioeconomic and ethnic backgrounds, skill levels and value systems.
    • Performs in a tactful and professional manner.
    • A wide degree of creativity and latitude is expected.
    • Relies on experience and judgment to plan and accomplish goals.
    • Computer skills required.
