Job Summary

The Audio Visual (AV) Services Engineer will support the strategic design, implementation, and maintenance of UCSF's AV systems and infrastructure. This role entails providing engineering and technical support to ensure the seamless operation of AV infrastructure, minimizing downtime, and optimizing efficiency. The Engineer's responsibilities include designing, configuring, troubleshooting, and maintaining AV equipment across various platforms. Additionally, the AV Services Engineer may offer technical guidance and training to other ITS teams, ensuring adherence to industry best practices in all technology-related procedures.
The AV Services Engineer will positively impact UCSF's operations and culture by ensuring UCSF's IT infrastructure is operable, secure, efficient, and effective in service of the University's mission. The AV Services Engineer will advance the University's mission by delivering exceptional information technology services comprehensively and consistently across customers and stakeholders. This role will execute UCSF's vision while modeling UCSF's culture and values.

The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy.

Your placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF. For positions that are represented by a labor union, placement within the salary range will be guided by the rules in the collective bargaining agreement.

The salary range for this position is $67,000 - $143,800 (Annual Rate).

The Digital Workplace Services team within Infrastructure Services is responsible for managing and maintaining UCSF's integrated communications, collaboration, and AV systems. This encompasses a wide array of technologies such as telephony voicemail, AV technology, video conferencing, and collaboration platforms. The department ensures seamless connectivity and efficient communication across various departments, supporting the institution's mission of providing high-quality healthcare, education, and research. The team plays a crucial role in implementing and optimizing digital workplace solutions to meet the diverse needs of faculty, clinicians, staff, and students, ultimately enhancing operational efficiency and collaboration within UCSF.

Required Qualifications


  • Bachelor's Degree or equivalent combination of experience/training in one or more of the following fields: information technology, computer science, public administration, business administration, communications.
  • 3 to 5+ years of experience working in one or more of the following fields: AV technology, unified communications, information technology or network operations.
  • Proficiency in AV technologies, including an understanding of audio/video signal flow, AV equipment functionality, audio, video, and communications circuitry, AV IT control systems, and industry standards.
  • Familiarity with AV integration principles, including knowledge of AV system design, installation, and troubleshooting.
  • Understanding of networking concepts and protocols relevant to AV systems, such as IP addressing, VLANs, and streaming protocols.
  • Knowledge of applicable codes and regulations.
  • Knowledge of audio, video, and control systems, as well as architectural and cabling requirements.
  • Strong technical skills in configuring, troubleshooting, and maintaining AV systems and equipment.
  • Experience managing phases of AV projects, including obtaining scope, budget, planning, design, bid preparation, installation, inspection, testing, and final walk-through. Ability to test and operate installed AV IT equipment.
  • Strong creativity and problem-solving abilities to quickly identify and resolve technical issues encountered during AV system deployment and operation.
  • Analytical skills to assess AV requirements, evaluate technical solutions, and make informed recommendations.
  • Ability to present technical concepts and solutions to diverse audiences, including non-technical stakeholders and business executives, in clear, concise, and business-friendly terms, highlighting the strategic value of AV initiatives.
  • Strong organizational skills, including the ability to prioritize tasks, manage multiple projects simultaneously, and adapt to evolving priorities and deadlines in a dynamic environment.
  • Strong communication skills, both verbal and written, with the ability to foster positive working relationships and cultivate a strong rapport with colleagues, stakeholders, and cross-functional teams.
  • Experience developing and nurturing collaborative working relationships within a diverse team environment, fostering a culture of innovation, knowledge sharing, and continuous improvement.

Preferred Qualifications


  • AVIXA Certified Technology Specialist, Certified Technology Specialist - Design, or Certified Technology Specialist - Installation
  • Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA)
  • Manufacture Certification (Crestron, Extron, QSC, etc.)
  • Knowledge of relevant software and tools used in AV design and engineering, such as CAD software, AV control systems, and DSP programming platforms.
  • Proficiency in designing AV solutions, including creating detailed schematics, AV flow diagrams, AV infrastructure drawings. equipment layouts, and system diagrams.
  • Experience in complex higher education environments, serving academic, medical, and research and administrative functions of a large public university.
