Job Announcement

Join the Park Authority and our nationally recognized team of professionals! The Fairfax County Park Authority (FCPA) is seeking a Vehicle and Equipment Tech I to be a part of one of the most highly-regarded park systems in the country. With more than 25,000 acres of parkland, nine RECenters, eight golf courses, three lakefront parks, and more, FCPA is an exciting organization to be a part of and there are many opportunities for staff to make a difference at every level. Under supervision, provides general service and repairs to equipment, provides journeyman level diagnostic & repair to specialized turf equipment, large tractors, and other mowing equipment. Assist in field and performs emergency repairs as required with limited supervision. With supervisory review, helps diagnoses, repairs, and services specialized equipment such as: ice resurfacer, amusement rides, power generator engines and heavy equipment. Completes diagnostic reports. Changes tires on all types of equipment with limited supervision. Using county service truck, may make road calls to complete some tasks. Uses tools and equipment to include but not limited to, tire balancer, lift, parts washer, battery charger and charging/starting analyzer. Maintains shop inside and outside for organization and cleanliness for safety.

Illustrative Duties

  • Repairs, services, inspects, and diagnoses components such as: engines, transmissions, after-treatment exhaust systems, brakes, clutches, radiators, electrical/electric components, HVAC components, hydraulic system components, pumps, bearings, steering, suspension, axles, differentials, and sub systems for automobiles, trucks, trailers, motorcycles, off-road equipment, pumps, generators, and other mechanical equipment;
  • Performs basic general preventative maintenance care to vehicles and equipment including changing oil filters, lubricating chassis, replacing belts, hoses, tires, and other for diesel, internal combustion, and hybrid engines;
  • Performs basic general preventative maintenance on electric engine vehicles to include software updates, brakes, and tires;
  • Follows checklists to ensure all critical parts are examined;
  • Reads and interprets diagnostic test results to identify mechanical problems;
  • Performs emergency road and tire repairs in all weather conditions;
  • Maintains records of inspections, test results, work performed, and parts used in the automated vehicle maintenance system;
  • Attends fleet specific and safety training;
  • Maintains awareness of new trends and technologies in the field of automotive repair;
  • Cleans vehicles and equipment, neatly storing tools and parts, properly discarding old/unused parts, sweeps areas, and collecting and empties trash as needed;
  • Follows all environmental regulations, and disposing of chemicals, trash, etc. in designated areas;
  • Recycles when required.

Required Knowledge Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge of methods and tools commonly used by journey level service technicians in the repair and maintenance of automotive and industrial equipment;
  • Knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the trade;
  • Mechanical skills to be familiar with engine components and systems and know how they interact with each other;
  • Troubleshooting skills to diagnose mechanical problems and make appropriate repairs to a wide variety of automotive and industrial equipment;
  • Basic keyboarding skills;
  • Ability to use tools and test equipment pertinent to the trade;
  • Ability to perform duties requiring manual dexterity, such as lifting, reaching, stooping, bending, and crawling and working in tiring and uncomfortable positions;
  • Ability to understand and follow written and oral instructions;
  • Ability to test-drive vehicles and equipment;
  • Ability to read and comprehend relevant documents;
  • Ability to work cooperatively with others.

Employment Standards

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Any combination of education, experience, and training equivalent to the following:(Click on the aforementioned link to learn how Fairfax County interprets equivalencies for "Any combination, experience, and training equivalent to")completion of the tenth grade plus two years of experience in problem diagnosis, repair and maintenance of a wide variety of light, medium, heavy and/or specialized automotive equipment. Related automotive technical education or trade training above high school may be substituted for experience on a year-for-year basis. Possession of a set of hand tools commonly used in the automotive industry, such as wrenches, pliers, sockets, and ratchets. Personal tools are required upon appointment.


PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • At least 3 years of experience in diagnostic skills in repairing of electrical circuits using multimeter and general testing equipment including amp meter, battery tester of engines of various types (gas, diesel, and electric).
  • At least 3 years of experience in diagnosis and repair of gasoline, 2 cycle & diesel engines and their systems which may include fuel, transmissions, hydraulic systems, CVT systems.
  • Experience using service manuals and reading schematics of given system and able to use internet to as an information source for equipment specifications
  • Ability to test drive various equipment including manual transmission.

CERTIFICATES AND LICENSES REQUIRED:
Driver's license (required)

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
The appointee to this position will be required to complete a criminal background check and driving record check to the satisfaction of the employer.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Ability to climb ladders and work at varying heights above the ground. Ability to lift 50 pounds frequently. Ability to traverse in uneven terrain for sustained periods of time during outdoor weather extremes. All duties may be performed with or without reasonable accommodations.
