Summary

The STEM Transfer Advisor is responsible for providing student-centered and holistic academic and career advising, guidance and mentorship for students transferring to Saint Xavier University, and for fostering student and career development for STEM transfer students. Works to support university and grant initiatives and strategic goals, drives measurable student outcomes, and works to improve retention in STEM by engaging in success advising techniques and facilitating articulation and dual enrollment agreements with area 2-year Hispanic-Serving Institutions. Serves as an integral player among campus-wide support offices. Executes proactive strategies to support overall student and career success. The position is funded through a five-year US Department of Education HSI STEM and Articulation Program grant initiative titledConexiones(P031C210201).

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  • Provides comprehensive academic advising and career planning services to STEM students transferring to Saint Xavier University from area 2-year/community colleges by utilizing a holistic and success-minded approach. Works to build relationships and connections with STEM transfer students through a mission-driven and student-centered approach.
  • Assists STEM transfer students with major and career exploration and development, academic and career planning assessments, and collaborates with STEM transfer students and University staff to develop educational plans that support student success.
  • Cultivates and maintains relationships with transfer students; collaborates with students and their support team to provide connection, mentorship, support, and individualized success plans that include major and career goals, service learning, and impactful experiences, such as leadership, study abroad, internships, and research opportunities in STEM fields.
  • Facilitates articulation and dual enrollment agreements for STEM fields with area two-year Hispanic-Serving Institutions and other community partners.
  • Maintains frequent contact with students at area two-year Hispanic-Serving Institutions planning to transfer to Saint Xavier to provide relevant advising and mentorship.
  • Builds relationships with faculty and advising staff at area two-year Hispanic-Serving Institutions to better serve STEM transfer students.
  • Collaborates with faculty and staff to facilitate student success, retention, and persistence and serves on university committees and task forces as required.
  • Participates in a wide variety of University events and retention initiatives, to include transfer student orientations (TSO), Transfer Days, commencement, etc.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree required; master's degree preferred; Field of study inSTEM preferred.
  • 1-3 years of experience working with transfer students, including knowledge of university academic degree requirements and the Illinois Articulation Initiative.
  • Experience with career development advising helpful.
  • Excellent communication skills both written and oral are mandatory.
  • Knowledge of Ellucian Colleague software is highly preferred.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and a commitment to student service are essential.
