Job Description

Are you a Senior Systems Engineer with leadership qualities and hands-on technical and project leadership experience seeking a new opportunity? This position allows for telecommuting, but you must be able to report to our Ashburn, VA data center with 2-hour notice.

A week in the life of our Senior Systems Engineer:



  • Participate in planning, design, and technical review and implementation for new infrastructure.
  • Lead and perform implementations of technical projects for maintaining data center infrastructure.
  • Work with the internal team, customers, and vendors to help resolve complex technical issues.
  • Troubleshoot physical network, virtual network and hardware related issues.
  • Identify and create documentation for the team's technical knowledgebase.
  • Track issues and analyze data looking for trends and systemic issues.
  • Help identify specifications for tools that facilitate deployment and decommissioning of systems.
  • Identify and support the implementation of process improvements and inform best practices in data center operations.
  • Translate customer business requirements to technical requirements/design.
  • Perform impact and risk analysis of upgrades, changes, and new implementations.
  • Recommend updates, upgrades and purchase options for existing infrastructure and future design
  • Assist in Operations functions as necessary as the Subject Matter Expert.

Job Requirements

  • U.S. Citizenship/ability to obtain a Secret clearance
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems or related field or equivalent work experience.
  • Minimum 10 years of experience in IT engineering working with complex systems and infrastructures, with at least 3 years of leadership/management experience
  • Must be able to report to Ashburn, VA data center with 2-hour notice
  • Current CISSP or IAT II certificate, OR achieve one of these certifications within the first 6 months from hire date
  • Practical knowledge of virtualization & virtual desktop implementation (VMware, Horizon)
  • Working knowledge of storage and multiple SAN/NAS solutions. (NetApp, VSAN)
  • Practical knowledge of routing and switching technologies (Ethernet, Fabric Channel - Cisco Nexus hardware preferred,F5)
  • Practical knowledge of care and maintenance of operating systems (Windows, Linux, other Unix)
  • Ability to support public cloud migration and private cloud interoperability
  • Ability to develop detailed flow and relationship diagrams (for processes and data), and to accurately interpret and apply existing such diagrams
  • Ability to clearly convey complex technical information to a variety of audiences from highly technical to non-technical - verbally and in writing
  • Ability to work closely and professionally with customers
  • Ability to understand, follow, and support the enforcement of technical and security procedures
  • Understanding complex systems and decomposition into smaller building blocks
  • Practical knowledge of software development life cycles and tools
  • Understanding of service delivery (ITIL) functions
  • Experience performing root cause analysis of problems/incidents
  • Ability to effectively use MS Office products; MS Visio and MS Project expertise a plus
  • Will accept technical certification credit for military experience where possible

AMERICAN SYSTEMS is committed to pay transparency for our applicants and employee-owners. The salary range for this position is $120,,000-$150,000. Actual compensation will be determined based on several factors permitted by law.
