The anticipated duration of this temporary assignment is approximately six months; possible extension up to one year. Please note: will be based at Mission Bay campus, but must be available to travel to all other UCSF locations in SF.

EH&S is responsible for the safety all faculty, staff, students, patients and visitors. EH&S also supports regulatory compliance for all campus workplace safety and environmental compliance issues including: biosafety, chemical safety, environmental protection, ergonomics, facilities safety, fire and life safety, industrial hygiene, radiation safety, laser safety, DEA controlled substance compliance, hazardous materials, spill response, food facility compliance and safety, safety training, personal protective equipment (PPE), asbestos, hazardous waste management, etc. The department also provides substantial safety and
environmental program support to the UCSF Health System and several UCSF affiliates.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Under direct supervision, performs entry-level duties in the fields of industrial hygiene, ergonomics, occupational safety, pest control, laboratory safety, environmental health (sanitation), environmental protection, hazardous materials control, hazardous waste management (may include shipping), fire safety, radiation safety, and emergency services.
  • Performs initial and annual respirator fit testing for UCSF faculty, learners, and staff.
  • Assists in scheduling fit testing sessions, including drop-in sessions, department-specific, and by appointment.
  • Assists in training on respiratory protection in conjunction with fit testing services and/or in response to other hazard assessments.
  • Assists with maintaining documentation required of the Respiratory Protection Program.
  • Assists with the revision of documentation, protocols, and policies related to respiratory protection and industrial hygiene reports.
  • Assists with data entry and maintaining databases.
  • Conducts basic sampling and/or monitoring procedures.
  • Performs indoor air quality investigations (including HVAC assessments).
  • Performs viable and non-viable air sampling in support of UCSF Health's infection control air sampling program.
  • Performs water and bulk sampling in support of various EH&S programs.
  • Performs occupational exposure monitoring for hazardous chemicals used in clinical and non-clinical environments under the supervision of senior IH staff.
  • Performs periodic testing of local exhaust ventilation (LEV) equipment.
  • Coordinates with UCSF employees, laboratories, equipment rental companies, and administration of data, equipment maintenance, and calibration.
  • Assists with basic ergonomic evaluations.

For roles covered by a bargaining unit agreement, there will be specific rules about where a new hire would be placed on the range. Department Description

UCSF's Temporary Employment Program (TEP) recruits and hires temporary employees for immediate clerical and technical support services to UCSF Departments and various off-campus locations. UCSF departments deploy temporary employees to work on special projects, fill in for regular employees who are on vacation or leave, or to temporarily fill a vacant position during recruitment. Frequently temporary employees become successful candidates for career and limited appointment positions.

Required Qualifications


  • Basic knowledge/understanding of relevant EH&S field(s) and related regulations.
  • Organizational skills to plan, organize, and prioritize work.
  • Written and interpersonal communication skills to communicate effectively.
  • Skill in following basic instructions and providing input and feedback as required.
  • Basic skills to appropriately use technology and relevant scientific equipment as required.
  • Bachelor's degree in related area and/or equivalent experience/training.
