Job Description

Position Description:

The Assistant General Counsel provides legal counsel, advice, and support to the Ameritas enterprise, primarily focused on supporting the life, annuity, and disability income insurance product lines. This support includes product development, in-force management, service, claims, reinsurance, and product taxation.

Position Location:

This is a hybrid role working partially in-office (Lincoln, NE) and partially from home.

What you do:



  • Serve as primary attorney providing advice and legal counsel to the Individual division which includes life insurance, annuity, and disability income products. This support includes all aspects of these lines, including product development and approval, in-force management, service, claims, reinsurance, and product taxation.
  • Provides legal risk analysis and legal opinions, including recommendations to business leaders.
  • Prepares legal documents, negotiates contracts, and resolves legal disputes.
  • Evaluates the legal impact of various corporate or major department strategies in situations where the laws, regulations and/or facts are unclear, determining the most advantageous alternative based on business and legal consideration and the environment in which the solution must operate.
  • May direct legal strategy while anticipating, managing, and reducing areas of legal and business risk.
  • May act as an enterprise contributor by partnering throughout the organization on cross-division initiatives.
  • Establishes professional working relationships with law department colleagues, the executive office and business leaders.
  • Demonstrates outstanding written and oral communication skills and ability to work both in teams and independently.


What you bring:



  • Juris Doctorate degree required.
  • 7-10 years of legal experience required.
  • Ability to conduct electronic legal research is required.
  • Must be a bar licensed attorney in at least one state with the ability to timely motion into or otherwise register with Nebraska if not Nebraska licensed.
  • Government Relations or insurance regulatory experience preferred but not required.

About this Position's Pay
The pay range posted reflects a nationwide minimum to maximum covering all potential locations where the position may be filled. The final determination on pay for any position will be based on multiple factors including role, career level, work location, skill set, and candidate level of experience to ensure pay equity within the organization. This position will be eligible to participate in our comprehensive benefits package (see above for details). This position will be eligible to participate in our Short-Term Incentive Plan with the annual target defined by the plan.
