The Dermatology Department is seeking an experienced Histotechnologist to support their Greenville, DE and Center City Philadelphia locations on a per diem basis. The Histotechnologist performs laboratory tissue testing according to established procedures and protocols. The Histotechnologist receives, processes, and prepares tissue samples for diagnosis using such procedures as embedding, microtomy, staining, cover-slipping, immunohistochemistry and special stains. The Histotechnologist may also specialize in a given laboratory discipline(s), and works effectively as a team member within the department and with other departments to provide quality service through communication, cooperation, and collaboration.

Job Description

Essential Functions

  • Interacts with co-workers, visitors, and other staff consistent with the values of Jefferson.

  • Performs histological procedures including embedding, cutting, and staining surgical, biopsy and anatomical tissues for light and fluorescent microscopic slide review. Recognizes deviation from expected results and refers them to designated supervisory personnel to prevent the release of inappropriate data. Analyzes and corrects problems within established periods to expedite diagnosis. 40-50 Blocks should be embedded and at least 30 blocks cut per hour, which includes a combination of biopsies, Fatty tissue cases and routines.

  • Maintains reagents and equipment in proper quantities and condition. Records instrument maintenance troubleshoots where necessary to insure accurate generation of test results.

  • Uses computer equipment to receive and validate laboratory orders to record and transmit test data efficiently.

  • Analyzes and records QC data with appropriate follow-up. May implement corrective action after consultation with supervisory personnel to verify accuracy and precision of instruments.

  • Participates in Quality Control programs following established procedures to verify accurate, reproducible and timely testing.

  • Communicates with clinical staff about Specimen submission requirements. Laboratory and hospital personnel answer inquiries about test results and methodology to keep medical staff knowledgeable of laboratory functions.

  • Participates in orientation and training of new employees and students, hospital and laboratory in-service and continuing education programs and mandated annual proficiency testing to ensure currency of job knowledge and technical competency.

  • Performs other duties as assigned by lead, supervisor, or manager.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:

Education:

Bachelor's degree in Histology, related life science or applied science field.

AND

Experience:

1-2 years' previous experience preferred; student training accepted

Minimum Certifications, Registration or License Requirements:

HT (ASCP) or equivalent preferred.
