Position Summary

The University of New Mexico's Communication & Marketing (UCAM) department seeks a dynamic Public Relations Specialist to execute various institutional-wide communication and public relations initiatives designed to enhance the university's ties to its internal and external constituencies. This position reports to the director of University News and Communication, organizes, coordinates, and oversees public relations activities within the communications department, positive relations with the public, and the print and electronic media. Develops and oversees content creation, dissemination of press releases and media communications, calendars, special promotions, and general information on related activities and events.

This position requires excellent narrative writing and editing skills and the ability to research and source information from multiple perspectives. To incorporate these elements into a compelling narrative, the successful candidate will have a working knowledge of multimedia technologies, including video, audio, photography, social media and web skills.

The primary duties and responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to:

  • Work in a flexible "newsroom" environment, coordinating and contributing to university communication by identifying, writing and pitching multimedia stories internally and externally, especially for assigned University "beats."
  • Build and maintain relationships with faculty, staff, and students, especially in assigned school, college, or departmental beats, including Undergraduate Research and Design and Graduate Studies.
  • Provide content, both written and visual for print and electronic publications, including UNM Newsroom and other publications as relevant.
  • Write for online as well as print audiences, and be able to edit content using AP Style.
  • Contribute to promotional and informational publications, research, writing and editing.
  • Conducts media relations efforts; establishes and maintains contacts with key media personnel; develops and implements press conferences, photo sessions, and press/media events.
  • Manage the UNM community calendar of events for internal and external use.

  • If this position is assigned to the Athletics Department, either administratively or functionally, compliance with all NCAA rules and regulations is required.


Minimum Qualifications

High school diploma or GED; at least 7 years of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.

Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.



Preferred Qualifications

Qualified candidates must be self-starters, able to work in an integrated marketing and communication team environment and have excellent communication and problem-solving skills. Candidates must be able to interact well with a diverse faculty, staff and student population professionally and productively, and create positive work relationships across campus and within UCAM.

  • Excellent writing skills as evidenced by your resume, cover letter and writing samples.
  • Experience and knowledge of working in a higher education environment.
  • Experience working with a diverse population in an academic/professional setting.
  • Experience pitching stories to the media.
  • Technology expertise, including design software such as Adobe Creative Cloud (CC) and Adobe Premier, is strongly preferred.
  • Podcast experience is also preferred but not required.
  • A bachelor's degree is strongly encouraged but not mandatory for this position.
