This department is responsible for preparing, recording and reporting all financial transactions for the organization. This includes accounts payable, payroll, time and attendance, accounts receivable and grant billings. The day-to-day tasks for this internship include managing new hire reporting, processing payroll, and reviewing and resolving various processing alerts. Responsibilities also involve calculating supplemental pay for short-term and long-term disability as well as workers' compensation. Other duties include responding to employee inquiries via email, phone, or Microsoft Teams to ensure timely and accurate communication. Additional tasks involve assisting with drafting policies and procedures, analyzing complex pay rules, and comparing multiple documents to identify and address discrepancies. These activities provide hands-on experience and valuable insight into payroll and Human Resources operations. This internship offers the opportunity to work in a collaborative environment while building complex documentation and gaining insights into collective bargaining unit contracts. Interns will learn about payroll operations within a large organization, develop problem-solving and analytical skills, and contribute to projects focused on operational efficiencies and best practices at SMUD. About SMUD's College Internship Program SMUD's College Internship Program provides college interns with an opportunity to contribute their skills and knowledge to SMUD while gaining valuable work experience. Workshops and activities will also be part of the program where interns will have the opportunity to be immersed in SMUD's culture and learn leadership skills as well as develop their professional skills. Purpose Under staff direction, incumbents in this classification are full-time students who perform research and analytical tasks for projects and assignments that utilize specific and acquired academic skills and knowledge in non-engineering subjects and disciplines. Nature and Scope The work performed in this classification calls for regular application of analytical and independent research skills. This work is distinguished from students engaged in repetitive and easily learned tasks who are employed in the Office Assistant (clerical/technical) classification. Incumbents in the Engineering Student Assistant classification perform at a similar level but are restricted to students majoring in an Engineering curriculum and performing tasks that employ acquired mathematical and science knowledge. Duties and Responsibilities Performs tasks of an analytical or research nature for suitable projects or ongoing assignments which call for specific acquired academic skills and knowledge. May locate sources of information; collects and organizes data. Makes computations and analyzes data for degree of confidence and for alternative courses of action. May develop computer programs relating to assignments and may code material for established programs. May develop written, graphic and/or oral reports. May assist staff analysts and technical personnel by performing elements of their work under close supervision. Required Education Registration as a full-time student (minimum of 12 units) at a resident academic institution in a declared curriculum that will provide the specific skills and knowledge that will contribute to available work assignments. Desirable Qualifications Sophomore, Junior, or Senior standing Majoring in Technical Writing or Human Resources Taken courses in Technical Writing Proficient in utilizing Microsoft Excel Possess strong communication skills Familiarity and experience in software testing Ability to work alone and collaborate with the larger group Interest or background in using AI tools to analyze and summarize text Physical Requirements Applicants must be able to perform the essential job functions with or without a reasonable accommodation. To have a student position at SMUD, you must not have any relatives working at SMUD. Internship dates are as follows: Semester students (May 27 - Aug. 15 2025) and Quarter students (June 23 - Sept.12 2025). Students must be enrolled as a full-time student, complete and pass at least 12 undergraduate units OR 8 graduate units, and receive at least a 2.0 GPA in the Spring Semester/Quarter of 2025. Students must be graduating in Summer 2025 or later. If the student is graduating in Summer 2025, they must be enrolled as a part-time student in the Summer of 2025. If the student is graduating in the Spring Semester/Quarter of 2025 but is pursuing another degree in the Fall Semester/Quarter of 2025, you will still be eligible. However, please make sure that it shows it clearly on your resume to show that you are eligible. During the summer internship, students can work up to 130 hours per month. Currently, SMUD is not hiring candidates for its student internship positions who require sponsorship from an employer either now or in the future. Such sponsorship is not needed for citizens, a U.S. National, a permanent resident, or one granted refuge or asylum status by the U.S. government.
