Summary of Position

The Specimen Processing Specialist I is responsible for general support functions within the Specimen Processing Department. A background in data entry or previous Lab experience is preferred. All functions must be performed with confidence, accuracy and in a timely manner. The Specimen Processing Specialist will learn and understand various client test requests. This position is critical to quality for customer satisfaction. Department is a production environment, with emphasis on productivity/quality standards and departmental completion times.

Key Job Elements



  • Verifies and enters patient demographics, physician data, tests requested, time and date of collection, appropriate clinical information and all other pertinent data found on laboratory request forms into the laboratory information system (LIS).
  • Identifies problems with materials or information provided by the client, such as specimen type verification, missing information, etc. and engages the Client Services department to resolve them.
  • Accurately enters patient information into the LIS.
  • Demonstrates an ability to learn the job duties assigned and develops an understanding of how all the functions in Specimen Processing fit together.


Qualifications

Knowledge/Experience



  • High School degree or equivalent required.
  • Bachelor's degree in the Sciences preferred.
  • Previous laboratory and/or data entry experience preferred.
  • Possess skills such as a high attention to detail and focus on quality.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology preferred.
  • Typing speed of at least 45 words per minute with a high accuracy rate.
  • Ability to multi-task and work in a fast-paced, deadline driven environment.
  • Ability to decipher various forms of handwriting.
  • Excellent skills in English usage, grammar, punctuation, and spelling.
  • Maintains composure while working under pressure.
  • Uses good judgment when determining what action to take when resolving problems.
  • Visual acuity (including color discrimination) and analytical skill to distinguish fine detail.
  • Manual dexterity to use common laboratory equipment as required.
  • Must possess the ability to sit and/or stand for extended periods of time.
  • Must possess the ability to perform repetitive motion.
  • Must possess the ability to lift up to 30 pounds.
  • May be exposed to hazardous waste material including stain waste (i.e., hematoxylin, eosin, etc.) aromatic hydrocarbons (xylene), and other combustible organics (i.e., ethyl alcohol and isopropanol).
  • May be required to handle blood-borne pathogens and general laboratory reagents. Adheres to safety and compliance policies and procedures.
