Work Schedule:
  • Summer Hours - 0600 to 1600 (consisting of four (4) ten (10) hour days)
  • Winter Hours - 0700 to 1500 (consisting of five (5), eight (8) hour days, M-F)

A Patrol Worker may be called upon at anytime to respond to emergency situations such as: snowstorms, windstorms, flooding, traffic accidents, fires, and must have the ability to:

  • perform moderate to heavy manual labor for extended periods under variable weather conditions;
  • operate a variety of trucks and equipment necessary for the maintenance and repair of roads and right-of-ways; and,
  • establish and maintain effective working and public relations with co-workers, the public, vendors and outside agencies.

Prior to hiring, the final candidate is required to pass work/education/certification reference(s), a criminal background and driver's license check, and a Physical Exam consisting of a hearing test, physical, DOT Drug Test, musculoskeletal evaluation, and TB Assessment.

Example of Duties

  1. Operates equipment for snow removal and de-icing under adverse and unfavorable weather conditions.
  2. Inspects highways and roads for damages and defects to the following: pavement, guardrail, fencing, signs, shoulders, culverts, catch basins, erosion on right of ways, and repair or replacement of highway defects.
  3. Establishes work zones for traffic control; establishes and re-establishes pavement markings per the standards of the Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices.
  4. Inspects, maintains, and operates equipment for daily projects such as mowing, ditching, grading, tree removal, painting, and vehicles to ensure continued safe and efficient operation.
  5. Erects and repairs bridge railings, guardrails, fencing, markers, signs, crash barrels and cushions, culverts, and inlets.
  6. Patrols State and county highways and roadways; removes debris and obstructions.
  7. Performs vegetation maintenance work which may include brush cutting and chipping, mowing, tree removal and trimming, and spraying.
  8. Keeps records and makes reports.
  9. May be called upon at anytime to respond to emergency situations such as de-icing, snowstorms, windstorms, flooding, traffic accidents, fires, and mass casualties.
  10. Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with supervisors, co?workers, contractors, vendors, law enforcement agencies, WI DOT, other outside agencies and County departments and staff, and the public.
  11. Maintains prompt, predictable, and regular attendance.
  12. Performs other duties as required.

Minimum Qualifications

Essential Knowledge and Abilities

  1. Working knowledge of the modern practices, procedures, tools, materials, and equipment used in the maintenance and repair of roads, highways, and right-of-ways.
  2. Working knowledge of occupational hazards and safe work practices.
  3. Working knowledge of the federal and state Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices.
  4. Some knowledge of the division, department, and County's electronic devices and computerized systems.
  5. Ability to learn and utilize division, department, and County electronic devices to effectively perform duties and responsibilities
  6. Ability to follow and carryout oral and written instructions.
  7. Ability to speak and write effectively.
  8. Ability to keep records and make reports.
  9. Ability to work independently and as a member of a team.
  10. Ability to perform moderate to heavy manual labor for extended periods under variable weather conditions.
  11. Ability to safely operate vehicles and equipment necessary to perform the duties of the position.
  12. Ability to withstand exposure to variable and unfavorable weather conditions.
  13. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors, co?workers, contractors, vendors, law enforcement agencies, WI DOT, other outside agencies and County departments and staff, and the public.
  14. Ability to effectively interact with sensitivity with persons from diverse cultural, socioeconomic, educational, racial, ethnic, and professional backgrounds, and persons of all ages and lifestyles.
  15. Ability to respond at anytime to emergency situations such as de-icing, snowstorms, windstorms, flooding, traffic accidents, fires, and mass casualties.
You must meet these minimum Training and Experience requirements:
  1. High school diploma or GED.
  2. Valid Class B Commercial Driver's License.
  3. Valid Wisconsin Class A Commercial Driver's License with air brake endorsement within six (6) months of hire. (Refer to the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration's (FMCSA) Training Provider Registry at https://tpr.fmcsa.dot.gov for information on obtaining a Class A CDL.)
  4. Work experience in maintenance and repair of roads and the operation of a variety of trucks and equipment is desirable.
Class A CDL highly preferred upon hire.
