About the Department |
The Benefits, Employee Wellness, and Work-Life Programs Team at North Carolina State University administers statutory and voluntary benefit programs, as authorized by the General Assembly of North Carolina, the Office of State Human Resources, and the
UNC System of Institutions for over 10,000 full-time and temporary employees. The
UHR Benefits Team is responsible for managing the overall design, compliance, administration, communication, implementation, and maintenance of benefit and leave programs. In addition to health, welfare and retirement benefits, the
UHR Benefits Team has the responsibility for directing many other support programs such as Leave Administration. |
Essential Job Duties |
The Leave Consultant serves as a support partner for employees by providing program support for Paid Parental Leave, Family and Medical Leave Act (
FMLA), Family Illness Leave (
FIL) and coordination for a variety of Leave programs offered by University Human Resources. In this role you will help ensure compliance with policies and provide expert guidance to employees, faculty, and HR partners. You'll get to help employees navigate processes, administer leave programs, and offer consultative support.
Key Responsibilities:
- Determine eligibility for leave programs and issue required notices per FMLA, state, and university policies.
- Provide expert guidance on leave processes, policies, and accrual programs, including vacation, sick, bonus, and extended absence programs.
- Deliver training and presentations on FMLA, Workers' Compensation, and other leave programs tailored to campus needs.
- Assist employees with absence management in systems like PeopleSoft and Wolftime.
- Administer additional leave programs, including Leave Without Pay, Voluntary Shared Leave, Scholarly Leave, Faculty 60-day Leave, and Military Leave.
- Advise employees on benefits programs relevant to absences, such as health, dental, vision, and asset protection plans.
- Generate reports and provide data insights to leadership as needed.

Other Responsibilities |
In addition to the responsibilities of this role, there may be occasional opportunities to take on additional duties, as directed by the Leave Program Manager. These additional responsibilities offer opportunities to build skills, explore new areas, and gain a deeper understanding of the department's operations. |
Qualifications
Minimum Education and Experience |
Bachelor's degree and two years of progressively responsible professional human resources management experience; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
All degrees must be from appropriately accredited institutions. |

Preferred Qualifications |
- Experience working in a Human Resources environment
- Experience using Microsoft Office and Google Suite applications
- HR certification (PHR, SPHR, or CBP) preferred
- Leave Management or Case Management certification (CPDM, CLMS, CDMS)
- Knowledge of various programmatic areas that coordinate leave administration including payroll, benefits, Voluntary Shared Leave, disability, FMLA, Workers' Compensation, Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), return to work, and other leave-related issues.
