This position description has been designed to indicate the general nature and level of work performed by employees within this classication. The Level 2 Operating Room Assistant is an advanced practitioner and fully procient, adept, skilled, and knowledgeable to the total Operating Room environment and exceeds in meeting all elements described In the Level1 ORA position description as validated by staff developer or ORA Supervisor.
The Level 2 Operating Room Assistant Is independently responsible and capable in providing advanced level of support and assistance in complex duties within the clinical and non-clinical areas of the Operating Room. This position functions at an advanced level in maintaining and organizing supply items, instruments, and equipment; has advanced knowledge and skill in handling clean and Infectious waste, handling & distributing sterile supplies, Instruments, and equipment; clean and test autoclaves for prociency; document properly in various logs and provide other general and advanced duties and responsibilities pertinent to the department's needs. In addition to working alongside other support staff, the incumbent mentors, and precepts newly hired ORA Level 1 novice staff, develops and validates skill attainment of level 1 ORA staff, and leads and motivate teams to achieve unit goals that contributes to OR readiness and effective patient care. The incumbent readily assumes role of ORA Relief Charge of the department and/or ORA Team Lead of an assigned functional area/pod as assigned by the ORA Supervisor or Unit Charge Nurse. While in the role of the ORA Relief Charge and/or Team Lead, the Incumbent directs team functions and assigns duties to team members. When not in a relief charge or lead role, the incumbent works alongside other support staff and fully Participates with the entire ORA Team and participates in activities that clean, organize, and prepare all areas of the Operating Room, Children's Surgery Center, University Tower Surgery Suite, and Same Day Surgery Center. In addition, but not limited to, the Incumbent facilitates transport of supply items, Instruments, and equipment. The incumbent in this role transports patients, transports the deceased, and transports specimens and blood products. Under the direct supervision of a registered nurse, the Incumbent may assist with a variety of patient care activities.
Level I Competencies (novice/developing competencies):
1. Demonstrable knowledge of correct patient identiers.
2. Demonstrable knowledge of safe patient transportation using gurney, bed, wheelchair.
3. Demonstrable knowledge of trac patterns in the surgical suite
4. Demonstrable knowledge of Universal Precautions/Standard Precautions
5. Demonstrable knowledge of identifying routinely used surgical equipment and supplies
6. Demonstrable knowledge of surgical case containment protocols
7. Demonstrable knowledge of cleaning/sanitation techniques in an OR room.
8. Demonstrable knowledge of handling and removing bio-hazardous waste from an OR room.
9. Demonstrable knowledge of the proper placement of routine equipment in OR room and storage areas
10. Demonstrable knowledge of cleaning x-ray "lead" aprons.
11. Demonstrable knowledge of uids placed in warming cabinets, with expiration date labeled, according to manufacturer's instruction for use.
12. Demonstrable knowledge of proper temperature range of the uid warming cabinet and log documentation
13. Demonstrable knowledge of proper temperature range of the blanket warming cabinet and log documentation
Level II Competencies (advance practitioner):
14. Demonstrable advanced knowledge of the principles of asepsis and sterile technique
15. Demonstrable advanced knowledge of opening sterile supplies to a sterile eld
16. Demonstrable advanced knowledge of identifying emergent used surgical equipment and supplies
17. Demonstrable advanced knowledge of the proper placement of emergent equipment and supplies in OR rooms
18. Demonstrable advanced knowledge of acquiring blood when Mass Transfusion Protocol is urgently requested
19. Demonstrable advanced knowledge of cleaning and testing autoclaves
20. Demonstrable advanced knowledge of autoclave documentation and autoclave log audits
21. Demonstrable advanced knowledge of safe patient positioning under direct supervision of RN or Surgeon.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Current American Heart Association (AHA) Basic Life Support (BLS) or UCDH CPR
  • High School Diploma, GED, or equivalent
  • At least 6 months of ORA or equivalent experience in an operating room setting
  • 1. Knowledgeable of the total Operating Room environment Including AORN professional standards, practices, and guidelines of the Perl operative area, including but not limited to:
  • a. Knowledge of aseptic technique
  • b. Knowledge of Universal Precautions
  • c. Knowledge of proper surgical attire
  • d. Knowledge of proper trac patterns In the surgical suites
  • e. Knowledge, skill, and ability to transport surgical patients
  • f. Knowledge, skill, and ability to Implement surgical case containment protocols & OR sanitation techniques
  • g. Knowledge, skill, and ability to identify emergent and routinely used surgical equipment and supplies
  • h. Knowledge, skill, and ability to care for surgical instruments and equipment
  • I. Knowledge, skill, and ability to handle Infectious waste and hazardous substances
  • {chemicals used for cleaning, sanitation, disinfection, and sterilization).
  • j. Knowledge, skill, and ability to clean and test functions of autoclaves

    Department Overview

Perioperative Services at UC Davis Health encompasses multiple Operating Rooms, Preoperative and Post-Anesthesia Units, and Sterile Processing Departments, across the UC Davis Health Campus. Surgical care is provided across the entire life spectrum, includes a wide range of inpatient and ambulatory surgical specialties, including (but not limited to: ACS Level 1 Trauma, Bariatric, Burn, Cardiac, Colorectal, Endocrine, ENT, Gynecology, comprehensive Neurosurgery, Oncologic, Ophthalmology, Orthopedic Trauma, comprehensive Orthopedic (Spine, Foot & Ankle, Hand & Hand Trauma), Otolaryngology, Pain, Plastics, Robotics, Thoracic, Transplant, Vascular, , Urology, and Uro-Gyn.

The Main Operating Room delivers patient care through provision and management of capital supplies, instrumentation and technological support as well human resources in collaboration with medical and paramedical staff to effectively manage patients undergoing elective, urgent, and emergent surgical intervention.
