What you'll do:



  • Patrol assigned area on campus to observe persons and property to reduce and prevent criminal activities.
  • Educate the public on ways to make themselves more secure and seeks participation for crime prevention.
  • Perform static or dynamic patrol, traffic direction and provide crowd management during special events such as concerts, athletic events and other similar activities which draw significant numbers of people.
  • Enforce federal, state and University laws, rules and regulations.
  • Investigate criminal complaints and both traffic and non-traffic accidents in conjunction with the Investigative Unit by collecting and preserving evidence, interviewing witnesses and interrogating suspects, searching records, and surveillance activities.
  • Testify in court or University hearings to knowledge of or actions taken in regard to matters of interest to the courts or University.
  • Watch for fire, fire hazards, safety hazards, and other dangerous or damaging situations and respond appropriately.
  • Provide for or arrange the care of sick or injured persons requiring emergency medical attention.
  • Escort persons making cash deposits, ensuring the safety of those individuals transporting large sums of money.
  • Assist the general public by answering inquiries, providing directions and other similar general service activities.
  • Perform special protective assignments with particular persons or property.
  • Other duties as assigned


Work Hours: Varies (Opportunities for overtime through special details including athletic events.)

Employees in this position are eligible for regular incremental raises in hourly rate tied to milestones in the training program. Eligible for three retention incentives starting second year.

Certified officers are eligible for a signing incentive upon completion of onboarding.

Qualifications

Education: High School diploma or GED

Experience: 6-12 months experience dealing with the public or an equivalent combination of education, military, or completion of a law enforcement/criminal justice program will be accepted


Requirements

  • Valid driver's license
  • Selected candidate(s) must establish residency that is within one-hour response time to the WVU police station, 992 Elmer Prince Drive, under normal driving conditions within 90 days of contingent offer and before official hire date. WVU Police Department.
  • Drug testing and medical management required.
  • Selected candidate(s) must successfully complete a pre-employment psychological evaluation before official hire date.
  • Selected candidate(s) must successfully complete a pre-employment physical examination and be within a certain height and weight range per WV State Police Academy requirements to be able to attend Academy.
  • Selected candidate(s) must successfully complete a pre-employment polygraph test before official hire date.
  • Applicant must pass physical agility testing (PAT) prior to final offer. PAT standards are as follows:

    • Sit-ups: 28 in one minute
    • Push-ups: 18 in one minute
    • Mile and half run: 14 minutes and 36 seconds


  • Following hire, applicants who do not possess WV Law Enforcement certification must attend and complete West Virginia Basic Law Enforcement Academy within one year.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain WV law enforcement officer certification.
  • Must be bondable upon background check.
  • Physical abilities include:

    • Standing, walking, carrying and bending daily
    • Running, jumping, and climbing weekly
