Job Description:

Responsibilities

This Research Scientist I will support development and validation of a new clinical method for measuring mercury species in human whole blood for use in human biomonitoring studies. The incumbent will be part of a team of scientists specializing in trace element analysis of biological tissues and fluids using techniques based on inorganic mass spectrometry. The incumbent will be responsible for coupling high performance liquid chromatography to inductively coupled plasma tandem mass spectrometry (LC-ICP-MS/MS). The expectation is that this work will lead to national recognition of Wadsworth as a center of excellence for speciation analysis using clinical ICP-MS coupled with advanced separation techniques.

This position will be part of a dynamic team serving the Wadsworth Center's mission in the New York State Department of Health's efforts to protect and promote the health of New York's citizens. Come be a part of Science in the Pursuit of Health!

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in a chemical, biological, clinical or medical laboratory science, or medical technology and two years of research experience; OR a Master's degree in a chemical, biological, clinical or medical laboratory science, or medical technology and one year of research experience.

Preferred Qualifications

PhD degree in Chemistry, Environmental Health Sciences or a closely related field, and hands-on experience at the graduate level with liquid chromatography systems, triple quadrupole inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LC-ICP-MS/MS), preferably using Agilent Mass Hunter Software, and using vapor generation ancillary devices. Prior experience with measuring mercury species in biological samples.

Conditions of Employment

Grant funded position. Compliance with funding requirements such as time and effort reporting, grant deliverables, and contract deliverables, is required.

This position requires that the incumbent will report to the official work location and live within commuting distance to the official work location. Telecommuting will not be available.

Travel, up to 10% of the time, will be required.

Exposure to potentially hazardous substances may be involved with this position. Therefore, the incumbent in this position may be required to wear personal protective clothing and equipment including but not limited to a laboratory coat, gloves and eye protection, as applicable.
