Job Summary

In collaboration with the CAO, Vice-Chairs of Clinical Operations (Adult, Pediatrics, ZSFG PMC), and Division Chiefs, the Director of Clinical Operations manages the department's clinical operations-related administrative activities. This is a leadership role that is responsible for the development and implementation of new processes that impact Anesthesia's clinical services, including clinical scheduling across multiple sites for residents, faculty, CRNAs, and fellows, management of clinical staffing ratios, hiring targets, training, compliance, risk management, and overall clinical operations. As a strategic partner, this position leads a team that manages clinical scheduling, faculty incentive compensation, and projects that support the strategic direction of both UCSF Campus and UCSF Health clinical coverage. This position collaborates with Anesthesia faculty and staff leadership and UCSF Perioperative leadership to investigate, develop, and implement clinical coverage plans and monitor their effectiveness, including monthly dashboard reporting.

Responsibilities include:

  • Direct supervision of the department's Clinical Scheduling and Faculty Compensation team.
  • Manages clinical functions, including incentive forecasting, staffing optimization, clinical scheduling and incentive pay, strategy and growth development around clinical coverage and clinical site development, and effective usage of locum/MSP and faculty providers and reporting.
  • Serves on the Faculty Compensation Committee as an administrative lead and oversees clinical systems training and compliance.
  • Oversees clinical faculty practice management for clinical operations across all clinical sites and affiliates.
  • Supports and maintains the development, implementation, and evaluation of physician compensation strategies and models that align with financial and organizational objectives and incentivize physician productivity and performance, including the design and implementation of monthly dashboard reporting to faculty leadership and CAO.
  • Independently uses and applies in-depth knowledge and experience to develop and manage high-profile strategic initiatives across the Department of Anesthesia clinical teams and stakeholders.
  • Leads cross-functional teams and projects using advanced professional concepts and objectives to address and resolve complex issues.
  • Works on programs requiring political sensitivity, where analysis of circumstances and information requires in-depth evaluation of factors.
  • Refines and manages the clinical commitment and non-clinical time process with annual review by faculty mission leaders, which includes obtaining and maintaining data to measure equity and consistency of the NCT process with an annual status report.
  • Refines and manages overscheduling in concert with Wellbeing feedback and initiatives.

The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy.

Your placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF. For positions that are represented by a labor union, placement within the salary range will be guided by the rules in the collective bargaining agreement.

The salary range for this position is $110,400 - $235,400 (Annual Rate).

Department Description

The Department of Anesthesia and Perioperative Care at UCSF provides outstanding patient care, promotes cutting-edge basic and clinical science research, and educates the next generation of healthcare providers while focusing on increasing diversity, equity, and inclusion across the organization.

The Department of Anesthesia and Perioperative Care ranks as one of the largest departments in the School of Medicine with an annual budget of $145 million. The two largest components of the annual budget are Professional Fee Income and Extramural Funds, representing 90.4% or $132 million (including ZSFG professional fees and 6.9% or $10.1 million of the annual budget, respectively. Currently, the department has over 298 Faculty members, 56 Staff Physicians, 191 Administrative and Research Staff, 11 Fellows, 90 Residents, 15 Non-Faculty Academics, 15 Postdocs, 87 CRNAs and 5 Nurse Practitioners at ZSFG.

In addition to the Moffitt-Long Hospital, very active units of the department exist at the Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital and Trauma Center (inpatient and outpatient, including a very active trauma service), San Francisco Veterans Affairs Medical Center (inpatient and outpatient), Mt. Zion Medical Center (outpatient, including 23-hour stays and the Pain Management Center), Benioff Children's Hospital Oakland, the UCSF Orthopedic Institute and the Benioff Children's, Betty Irene Moore Women's and Bakar Cancer (NIH-designated Cancer Center) Hospitals in the Mission Bay neighborhood.

The Department now has essential roles in patient care outside of the operating rooms, with active participation in Ambulatory Care, Acute and Chronic Pain, and the Preoperative Clinic. Over the department's fifty-plus years of existence, the department has been at the heart of modern anesthesia's explosive growth and to this day, continues to have an enormous impact on surgical practice and pain management. The department's research, education, and clinical care quickly earned and have maintained reputations among the top institutions in the world. Individual faculty members have significant influence on our specialty nationally and internationally, including NIH study sections, NIH funding, FDA, and Editorial Boards Research activities within this department are integrated with and inform clinical practice.

Required Qualifications


  • Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent combination of experience / training.
  • Minimum 6 years of related experience and 5 years of experience as a lead/supervisor/manager
  • Proven ability to organize, manage multiple priorities, and delegate work functions efficiently.
  • Demonstrated managerial skills and human resources management knowledge, including staff deployment, resource utilization, budgeting and financial management, quality improvement, and program planning and implementation.
  • Strong written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills to convey complex information, instructions, and guidelines in a clear, concise, and specific manner, and to influence and persuade all levels of staff.
  • Strong working knowledge of the higher education/research/academic health system organization.
  • Superior organizational and complex project management skills. Ability to lead a team, prioritize personal and team tasks and see projects through from inception to completion on schedule. Exceptional customer service, analytical, planning, problem-solving, interpersonal, and team-building skills. Ability to effectively persuade and negotiate results in complex situations.
  • Advanced interpersonal skills. Skills to work collaboratively; coordinate and integrate with others throughout the organization. Successful experience working with people with a wide range of backgrounds and skills. Advanced negotiation skills to bring all levels of constituents to satisfactory agreement in order to successfully accomplish strategic outcomes.

Preferred Qualifications


  • Clinical operations management experience, with progressive expertise in practice management, scheduling, regulatory compliance, accreditation requirements, and information technology.
  • Knowledge of relevant healthcare and clinic operations information technology, including billing systems and patient care workflows and processes.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of relevant regulatory requirements, as well as related legislative, accreditation, licensing, and compliance environments.
  • Prior UC Health and Campus experience
  • In-depth knowledge of data analysis, research, and reporting, particularly methods used in perioperative setting.
