Job Summary:



The Clinical Director of Congenital Cardiac Anesthesiology oversees clinical operations of the congenital cardiac anesthesia team ensuring exceptional patient care and the smooth delivery of congenital cardiac anesthesia services, maintaining the highest standards of safety, quality, and process improvement. This leader will also support the diversity, wellness and professional development of congenital cardiac faculty, teaching of learners and furthering the science of the field through scholarship. To accomplish these missions, this role collaborates closely with Departmental and Divisional leaders, perioperative, surgical and cardiology leadership, as well as Children's Hospital Colorado (CHCO) Heart Institute administrative teams.

The selected individual must maintain a full-time faculty position in the Department of Anesthesiology, Division of Pediatric Anesthesiology, at the Associate Professor or Professor level. An MD or DO is required as is board certification in anesthesiology and pediatric anesthesia. In their faculty position, the individual must continue clinical duties, which include supervising advanced practice providers and learners in a clinical setting. Additionally, the faculty member is expected to maintain his or her academic productivity and scholarship activities.

Key Responsibilities:

The Medical Director of Congenital Cardiac Anesthesiology Duties:



  • Represent the Department of Anesthesiology with professionalism.
  • Serve as a liaison between patients, surgical staff, nursing teams, and medical staff.
  • Develop and manage staffing models for cardiac anesthesia services across clinical locations.
  • Ensure 24/7 emergency response for congenital cardiac cases.
  • Oversee clinical care of providers, including assigning and evaluating work within the department.
  • Maintain clinical, academic, and administrative balance, ensuring that all staff are supported and operational concerns are promptly addressed.
  • Lead recruitment, onboarding, and the development of Congenital Cardiac Team
  • Respond to patient concerns and follow up on quality assurance and safety reports.
  • Participate in or lead relevant Anesthesiology and Heart Institute committees.
  • Help to guide the vision of the Cardiac team.
  • Lead recruitment efforts and oversee liaison recruitment and management.
  • Review anesthesia code events and disseminate critical information.


The Congenital Cardiac Clinical Director is an at-will position that can be changed at any time based on the performance of specified duties.

Key Relationships:

Supervision Received: The Director of Cardiac Anesthesiology will report directly to the Pediatric Division Chief, Department of Anesthesiology.

Other Key Relationships: Cardiac Surgeons, Interventional Cardiologists, Cardiac Clinical Manager, Heart Institute administration

Department Leadership: Departmental Vice Chairs of Education, Faculty Development, Diversity Equity & Inclusion.

Division Leadership: Division Administrator, Clinical Medical Director, Clinical Quality Director, Chief Anesthetist, Cardiac Anesthetist Lead, Pediatric Anesthesiology Fellowship Program Director and Associate Director, Congenital Cardiac Fellowship Director.

Onsite - this role is expected to work onsite and is located in Aurora, Colorado.

Minimum Qualifications:

Applicants must meet minimum qualifications at the time of hire.

This is an open rank position and could be categorized as Assistant Professor, Associate Professor or Professor based on experience and qualifications as indicated below:

Assistant Professor:



  • Licensed to practice medicine in the State of Colorado
  • Board Certified in Anesthesiology and Pediatric Anesthesiology by the American Board of Anesthesiology or equivalent certification body.
  • Currently appointed or able to be appointed to the University of Colorado School of Medicine faculty.
  • Demonstrated leadership experience with a track record of collaboration and ongoing success.
  • Demonstrated experience in operational management with training in operational analytics.
  • The Congenital Cardiac Clinical Director must maintain a 1.0 overall FTE


Associate Professor:



  • Licensed to practice medicine in the State of Colorado
  • Board Certified in Anesthesiology and Pediatric Anesthesiology by the American Board of Anesthesiology or equivalent certification body.
  • Currently appointed or able to be appointed to the University of Colorado School of Medicine faculty.
  • Demonstrated leadership experience with a track record of collaboration and ongoing success.
  • Demonstrated experience in operational management with training in operational analytics.
  • The Congenital Cardiac Clinical Director must maintain a 1.0 overall FTE


Professor:



  • Licensed to practice medicine in the State of Colorado
  • Board Certified in Anesthesiology and Pediatric Anesthesiology by the American Board of Anesthesiology or equivalent certification body.
  • Currently appointed or able to be appointed to the University of Colorado School of Medicine faculty.
  • Demonstrated leadership experience with a track record of collaboration and ongoing success.
  • Demonstrated experience in operational management with training in operational analytics.
  • The Congenital Cardiac Clinical Director must maintain a 1.0 overall FTE


Preferred Qualifications:



  • Licensed to practice medicine in the State of Colorado by effective hire date
  • Fellowship-trained in Pediatric Anesthesiology
  • Fellowship-trained in Pediatric Cardiac Anesthesiology (one year)
  • Board certification in pediatric anesthesiology is highly desirable and expected within two years of employment.
  • Experience teaching Anesthesiology
  • Currently working as a dedicated pediatric cardiac anesthesiologist
  • Demonstrated leadership experience with a track record of collaboration and ongoing success.


Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:



  • Maintain effective working relationships and consistent communication with Departmental leadership.
  • Maintain Operational staffing database for analysis of ongoing staffing needs.
  • Create forecasting models for optimal staffing for future clinical locations.
  • Oversee the creation of the clinical schedule collaborating with APP leadership, education leadership, and administrative support managers relevant to these areas.
  • Manage weekend and holiday staffing schedules in collaboration with perioperative nursing to ensure balanced staffing allocations.
  • Develop annual strategic goals for Clinical Operations.
  • Treat all employees fairly, equally and with respect.
  • Ensure decision-making is in alignment with Departmental mission, goals, and strategy.
  • Maintain confidentiality regarding applicable financial, HR-related and other Departmental leadership discussions.
  • Provide routine updates to the Division Chief regarding clinical operations
  • Oversee distribution of the attending physician call schedule and ensure fair and equitable distribution.

Anticipated Pay Range:



The starting salary range (or hiring range) for this position has been established as HIRING RANGE:

Assistant Professor: $335,000 - $360,000

Associate Professor: $385,000

Professor: $410,000

This position is eligible for a competitive benefits package, leadership stipend, and protected time for leadership responsibilities.

Additionally, the stipend for this position has been established at $20,000 and 0.1 FTE of protected time. The stipend of the finalist selected for this role is set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to, internal equity, experience, education, specialty and training. As the Clinical Director of a key CHCO Service-Line, this position is also eligible for incentive compensation based on quality and performance metrics set by the CHCO Heart Institute. These metrics and eligibility amount will be confirmed and documented annually with the CHCO Heart Institute.

The above salary range (or hiring range) represents the University's good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting. This position is not eligible for overtime compensation unless it is non-exempt.
