The Position

The Douglas County Attorney's Office in Omaha, Nebraska is currently accepting applications to fill a deputy county attorney position in the Civil Division. This is a county government in-house counsel and litigation position. Depending on the interests and experience of the applicant, areas of practice may include employment, contract, administrative, constitutional and tax law, risk management and compliance, litigation, and general legal affairs for the most populous county in Nebraska.
Job duties may include, but are not limited to: contract review and drafting, inheritance tax review, interpreting statutes related to public entities and providing legal advice to County Departments, responding to public records requests, and representing Douglas County and its departments in civil lawsuits in state and federal courts. Candidates will have additional job duties assigned by the County Attorney or designee.
Salary is negotiable. For this posting and depending on experience, the anticipated pay range is $79,380 to $115,698 annually, with annual adjustments and step increases. (For more senior Deputy County Attorneys, the pay range extends above $115,698.) For Deputy County Attorneys an excellent benefits package is also included, plus paid parental leave. Telework is available per office policy.

Education and Work Experience and Other Requirements

Graduation from an accredited law school with a Juris Doctor degree, and licensed or eligible for licensure to practice law in Nebraska. A minimum of three (3) years experience required, but five (5) years of experience working as a licensed attorney is preferred. Employment law and general civil litigation experience is also preferred, but not required.
Ability to read, understand and interpret legal documents. Excellent research and writing skills, time-management skills, and ability to understand and manage complex factual and legal issues. Ability to exercise sound, independent judgment and decision making. Ability to independently research the law to analogize and distinguish precedent and apply the law to a factual scenario based on an evidentiary record. Skill in preparing legal opinions and orders; ability to prioritize work and carry out assigned projects to their completion; ability to work under pressure and/or frequent interruptions; ability to handle information of a confidential and sensitive nature. Ability to understand and follow exacting verbal and written instructions; ability to communicate effectively, in English, verbally and in writing. Must have experience using electronic legal resources to complete legal research; ability to utilize word processing skills to prepare work product.
Establish and maintain effective working relationships with clients, supervisors, County employees, elected officials, attorneys, law enforcement, judges, court personnel, other governmental offices and agencies, and the general public. Report to work with regular, predictable, and consistent attendance.

Work is generally performed indoors in an office setting. Noise level is usually moderate. Hours of work are generally standard day-shift hours however work hours may occasionally include weekend, emergency call-in and additional hours. Incumbents may encounter uncooperative or irate persons while performing duties.
Work requires some physical activity, including extended periods of sitting and standing, frequent walking, and occasional balancing, kneeling, bending, and reaching. Work also requires the ability to frequently lift and carry supplies, equipment and documents weighing up to 10 pounds and occasionally up to 25 pounds.
Required sensory abilities include vision, hearing and touch. Visual abilities, correctable to normal ranges, include close, distance and color vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. Communication abilities include the ability to talk and hear within normal ranges. Incumbent must possess the hand-eye coordination and manual dexterity necessary to operate computers and other equipment.

About Douglas County Attorney's Office The Douglas County Attorney is an elected position with a four-year term of office. Donald W. Kleine began his service as Douglas County Attorney in 2007. The County Attorney's Office is responsible for: Felony criminal prosecution; Misdemeanor domestic violence prosecution; Juvenile delinquency prosecution; Child protection prosecution; Coroner's duties; Inheritance tax review; Providing legal support to the officials and employees of Douglas County; and Civil litigation on behalf of Douglas County. It is the duty of the County Attorney: To prosecute or defend, on behalf of the State and County, all suits, applications, or motions, civil or criminal, arising under the laws of the state in which the state or the county is a party or interested; To prosecute such individuals when sufficient evidence warrants the belief that a person is guilty and can be convicted of a felony or misdemeanor; To file the proper complaint against parties believed to be guilty and to appear in the several courts of the county and prosecute the appropriate criminal proceedings on behalf of the state and county; and To give opinions and advice to the board of county commissioners and other county officers and departments, when requested, upon all matters in which the state or county may have an interest; to perform all of the duties of the County Coroner. The Douglas County Attorney's Office consists of the following: Criminal Division; Domestic Violence Unit; Juvenile Division; Civil Division; Victim Assistance Program; Bad Checks Unit; and the Coroner's Office.
