Job Summary

This position provides culturally attuned, trauma-informed psychological services to the diverse student population at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF). Student Mental Health and Wellbeing (SMHW) is a highly utilized, comprehensive service that includes counseling and psychological services. SMHW assists students with a wide range of concerns including academic success, life management, career and life planning, crisis management, and emotional and psychiatric issues. Our highly motivated, collaborative mental health team consists of a diverse group of marriage and family therapists, psychiatrists, and clinical and counseling psychologists. Our Team regularly consults with UC Health primary care providers about psychological factors affecting students' well-being and health.

This position will provide assessment, crisis intervention, individual, and possibly, group counseling. Most of this position's time is spent providing case management services. Case management services are designed to assist students in optimizing their educational experience, minimizing the impact of illness, injury and emotional distress on students' academic careers by coordinating health care through a network of campus and community resources. Coordination of care will also include liaison work with the Multicultural Resource Center, Student Disability Services, and other units within Student Academic Affairs. Designs and implements psycho-educational programming and outreach programs to address a range of student needs. Consults with faculty and staff on issues relevant to student educational performance, emotional well-being and psychological functioning.

Department Description

UCSF Student Mental Health and Wellbeing offers mental health counseling, psychiatry services, outreach programming for both physical and mental health topics, and health insurance support services for all UCSF students and learners with the overall goal of supporting students' personal and academic success.

Required Qualifications


  • Advanced degree from an accredited institution in Psychology, Counseling, Social Work, or a related field or an equivalent combination of education and experience, and the knowledge and abilities essential to the successful performance of the duties assigned to the position.
  • Thorough knowledge and understanding of clinical counseling principles, methods, procedures, and standards.
  • Thorough knowledge of legal and ethical issues related to patients' rights.
  • Ability to evaluate the progress of therapeutic approach and modify as necessary.
  • Ability to develop and present educational programs and / or workshops.
  • Highly effective problem-solving and critical-thinking skills.
  • Ability to work in a highly collaborative manner with a diverse client group.
  • Highly effective verbal and written communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Knowledge of business software and specialized applications / systems used in behavioral health settings.
  • Experience providing psychological services to underserved populations.
  • Experience working on a college campus or with college students, preferably graduate and/or professional students.
  • Specialized expertise working with concerns specific to graduate and professional students.
  • Clinical experience working with individuals who are in varying states of emotional distress presenting with a wide range of psychological concerns and disorders.
  • Expertise in working with multicultural and underserved student populations.
  • Strong Skills providing brief individual and couples counseling and time-limed, brief psychotherapy.
  • Highly developed skills providing psychotherapy.
  • Highly developed skills providing diagnostic/psychological testing methodologies, assessment, diagnosis and crisis intervention.
  • Experience working with electronic medical records systems.
  • Skills in psychological consultation and crisis management.
  • Thorough knowledge of applicable laws and standards of professional conduct.
  • Ability to conduct complex analysis and develop and present recommendations and course of treatment.
  • Highly effective written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills, including strong skills in delivering group presentations, lectures and workshops aimed to bring a psychological perspective to bear on University life.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with a highly skilled, enthusiastic, friendly staff.
  • Ability to deal effectively with high levels of stress, emotionality, and ambiguity.

Preferred Qualifications


  • Licensed clinical social worker, licensed psychologist, or licensed MFT (current and unrestricted license in CA)

License/Certification


  • License eligible and licensed with 12 months of hire - Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW), Licensed Psychologist, or Licensed Marriage and Familty Therapist (LMFT)
