DESCRIPTION

The Marine Physical Laboratory Division at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography at UC San Diego is seeking a skilled Research Data Analyst 2.

As a member of a field research group conducting acoustic ecology research, the Research Data Analyst shall include:

  • Assist in the collection of biological and physical oceanographic, acoustic, and environmental data at-sea and provide an initial assessment of data quality.

  • Develop data processing algorithms, test cases, and algorithm documentation.

  • Assist in analysis of acoustic ecological data including documentation of the results.

  • Works on research data reporting assignments that are of moderate diversity in scope.

  • Exercises judgment within generally defined practices and policies in selecting methods and techniques for obtaining solutions.

Responsibilities in At-Sea Data Collection, Initial Data Quality Assessment, and Data Archival include:

Provide support in instrument preparation, deployments and recoveries. Provide data documentation and archival both during and after an experiment. Take part in developing and implementing sampling and archival plans (e.g. for acoustic, CTD, net tow, etc. metadata).

Responsibilities in Algorithm Development and Data Analysis include:

Develop, test, and document algorithms to process data from acoustic and other sensors in MATLAB or R. Make software products available within the research group and externally to the scientific community. Formulate the data analysis approach, analyze the data, and summarize the results. Create statistical models to document ecological relationships based on analyzed data products and including auxiliary data from other remotely sensed measurements. Use multi-channel acoustic data to localize sound sources.

Responsibilities in Documentation and Presentation Preparation include:

Prepares or assist in preparation of plots and related technical information for use in scientific publications, technical reports, proposals, and oral presentations.

QUALIFICATIONS
  • B.S. in Engineering, Physics, Applied Mathematics, Biological Oceanography, or other applied science degree and/or equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Strong analytic and software background including demonstrated experience with programming languages such as Matlab and R.

  • Working skills in statistical analysis, systems programming, database design and data security measures. Working skills in applied time series analysis.

  • Strong attention to detail in processing, integrating, documenting and reporting on analysis results.

  • Working knowledge of research function.

  • Skills to communicate complex information in a clear and concise manner both verbally and in writing. Ability to work with and interact effectively with faculty, researchers, postdocs, staff, graduate and undergraduate students.

  • Working skills in analysis and consultation. Ability to work in a collaborative manner and to assist in identifying any challenges or barriers.

  • Ability to effectively handle changing priorities and multiple assignments.

  • Ability to work at-sea in remote locations and under adverse conditions for extended periods of time.

SPECIAL CONDITIONS
  • Ability to work at sea for up to two months per year and function under adverse conditions.

  • Occasional overtime and long hours (usually during at-sea experiments).

  • Valid US passport required for travel to foreign ports.

  • Access to reliable transportation or ability to obtain and maintain a California driver's license to operate a University vehicle.

  • Offer of employment is contingent upon candidate clearing the background check process.

Pay Transparency Act

Annual Full Pay Range: $69,500 - $123,500 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)

Hourly Equivalent: $33.29 - $59.15

Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
