THE POSITION

Are you interested in using your communication, collaboration, and data analysis skills to advance public health? If so, apply to become part of the Division of Healthcare Associated Infection Prevention (HAIP) as an Infection Prevention Intern. This rewarding internship gives you the opportunity to assist the HAIP Outbreak Response and MDRO Prevention Teams combat multi-drug resistant organisms (MDROs) across PA!

This paid internship is open to all current public health students in Pennsylvania (master's level or higher, is preferred). Knowledge of SAS or R coding is preferred.


DESCRIPTION OF WORK

As an Epidemiology Intern, you will have the opportunity to collaborate with the HAIP MDRO Prevention and Outbreak Response teams to design and complete a descriptive analysis of reported HAI-related data in PA, including the use of data from the PA electronic disease surveillance system (PA-NEDSS) and the National Healthcare Safety Network (NHSN). This analysis will help inform the planning of future HAIP outbreak and prevention projects within Pennsylvania. Work includes, but may not be limited to:

  • Conducting routine surveillance activities using PA-NEDSS
  • Partnering with HAIP Outbreak Response Team to assist with investigation of a case or clusters of emerging and high-concern pathogens across PA
  • Participating in healthcare facility site visits with HAIP Outbreak Response and MDRO Prevention Teams
  • Supporting HAIP staff to develop themes and concepts for fact sheets, infographics, and social media campaigns that align with PA DOH Communication standards to promote team activities

Work Schedule and Additional Information:

  • Internship
  • Flexible hours, approximately 15 to 20 hours per week (20 is the maximum).
  • Telework: You may have the opportunity to work from home (telework) part-time. In order to telework, you must have a securely configured high-speed internet connection and work from an approved location inside Pennsylvania. If you are unable to telework, you will have the option to report to the headquarters office in Harrisburg.
  • Salary: In some cases, the starting salary may be non-negotiable.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE, TRAINING & ELIGIBILITY

QUALIFICATIONS

Internship Requirements:

  • Current full-time enrollment in a bachelor's degree program or higher.
  • Good academic standing (2.0 GPA or higher).
  • Pennsylvania residency or enrollment at a Pennsylvania college or university.

Additional Requirements:

  • You must possess a valid driver's license which is not under suspension.
  • You must be able to perform essential job functions.

Preferred Qualifications (not required):

  • Successful completion of a bachelor's degree program
