The Thomas Harriot College of Arts and Sciences is home to 16 academic departments, a number of research centers including the Center for Survey Research, Geographic Information Science Center, and the Water Resources Center, as well as, and more than over twenty inter- and multi-disciplinary programs. The College seeks to create an environment that fosters the recruitment and retention of our student body, faculty, staff, and administration and works to increase access to higher education by building a culture of care, belonging, and opportunity.

ECU's Department of Biology is home to more than 1,300 undergraduate majors (BS and BA in Biology and BS in Biochemistry) and instructs more than 17,000 students each academic year. Faculty in the department are committed to providing high-impact training in research to undergraduate, Masters and Doctoral-level students. The Department of Biology is broad in its representation of different biological subdisciplines and emphasizes integrative approaches drawing from across the natural sciences. Faculty and students in the Department of Biology have ample opportunity to collaborate with others across campus, including those within the Department of Chemistry, Water Resources Center, Brody School of Medicine, Mass Spectrometry Facility, and Eastern Region Pharma Center. In consultation with a developer, ECU is also in the process of building an innovation hub on its millennial campus that would provide additional on-campus opportunities for partnership with private industry.

The Department of Biology and its research facilities (Microscopy, Genomics, and a vivarium) are primarily housed in the new Life Sciences and Biotechnology Building, a gateway to a growing, vibrant downtown district in the coastal region of North Carolina. In addition, Howell Science Complex South Wing, which houses many upper-level biology teaching labs, is currently undergoing renovation and is set to re-open in 2026. Multiple state-of-the-art active learning classrooms are also available for teaching. ECU has a variety of other cutting-edge shared resource facilities that give access to advanced imaging, flow cytometry and sequencing technologies.

Job Duties
The Department of Biology at East Carolina University seeks to fill a fixed-term faculty position (9-month appointment) at the Teaching Assistant Professor or Teaching Associate Professor level with expertise in introductory-level biology, genetics, and evidence-based teaching practices to begin August 2025.

The successful candidate will be expected to teach a one-semester General Biology course (Biol 1050) for non-science majors and Genetics (Biol 2300). In addition, the successful candidate will teach courses in at least one of following areas: biotechnology, microbiology with a human health focus, or anatomy and physiology. The new faculty member will become a part of a collegial, interdisciplinary Biology Department and will be expected to participate fully in Departmental, College, and University activities (e.g., advising, student recruitment events). This position begins in August 2025 and includes the possibility of subsequent renewals and advancement in title. The successful applicant will contribute to the instruction of the equivalent of four courses during each of the fall and spring semesters. Summer teaching for additional pay may be possible.

Minimum Education/Experience
A Ph. D. in Biology or Genetics or another closely related field (including but not limited to Microbiology, Physiology, Molecular, Cell or Evolutionary Biology). Qualifying degrees must be received at the time of consideration from accredited institutions.

Prior university teaching experience is preferred.
