Organizational Unit Overview
The primary purpose of the Police Department is to support the University's core mission of teaching, research, and public service by providing comprehensive and professional police services. The Department's staff protects and serves the University community by enforcing the laws of North Carolina, policies of the University, preserving and optimizing resources and by maintaining an environment that fosters higher education and community-oriented service.
Job Duties
The primary purpose of a Police Telecommunicator is to operate the Telecommunications Office at the East Carolina University Police Department 24 hours a day, seven days a week. It is essential for the Telecommunicator to possess the ability to multi-task and to possess critical thinking skills during his or her shift. The Telecommunicator will monitor and operate all communication equipment, maintaining contact with all field personnel and other enforcement agencies by means of radios, telephone systems, computer terminals and face-to-face contact. This will keep the flow of communications between the general public, departmental employees, and other law enforcement agencies running smoothly and swiftly.

Candidates will work with a diversified community; communicate effectively with those who may be irate; make effective decisions in emergency life and death situations; prioritize calls and identify potential dangers; and work as a member of a team and interact favorably with all students, staff, faculty, and visitors. The selected candidate will be able to work 12-hour rotating shifts.

Candidate must undergo an extensive background investigation including, but not limited to psychological evaluation, medical exam, and drug screen.

Minimum Education/Experience
High School diploma and sufficient experience to demonstrate ability to work under pressure. Requires certification as a Division of Criminal Information computer operator or the ability to achieve certification within 45 days of employment. May require Basic Telecommunicator Certification in accordance with the provisions of the North Carolina Criminal Justice Training and Standards Commission or the ability to achieve certification within one year of employment. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.
License or Certification required by statute or regulation
