Minimum Qualifications
The minimum qualifications include:

  • an earned doctorate in mathematics or a related field with a minimum of 18 graduate hours of mathematics coursework,
  • a clear agenda for continuing scholarship,
  • excellent written and verbal communication skills,
  • documented experience in or potential for teaching upper-level undergraduate and graduate mathematics courses

Areas of Interest (No Minimum Level Required)
The department especially seeks someone with experience in or documented potential for the following:

  • teaching core undergraduate and master's level courses in real analysis and/or abstract algebra.
  • teaching advanced undergraduate and master's level elective courses.
  • mentoring undergraduate and master's level student research projects.
  • educating students of varied mathematical backgrounds,
  • pursuing and implementing a variety of pedagogical strategies in the classroom,
  • building an inclusive scholarly environment in teaching, mentoring, research, and/or service.

Description of the Department or Unit
The Department of Mathematical Sciences promotes intellectual curiosity, critical thinking, and a culture of learning in a supportive environment that encourages faculty to actively engage in teaching, scholarship, and service in the pursuit of student excellence. The department consists of 31 tenured or tenure track faculty as well as more than 30 full-time and part-time non-tenure track faculty. The department offers a B.S. degree in actuarial science, a B.S. degree in mathematics with concentrations in statistics, secondary education, business, life sciences, physical sciences, and computation and a B.A. degree in mathematics. The department also offers an M.A. with concentrations in either college teaching or secondary education. Over the last ten years, the department has graduated 55 undergraduate and 10 graduate majors each year on average.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Faculty in the Department of Mathematical Sciences will:

  • teach undergraduate and graduate courses in the mathematical sciences, with a standard teaching load of 18 semester hours per year for research-active faculty,
  • establish and maintain an active program of research or other scholarly activities that may include applying for external funding,
  • participate in service activities which may include advising students, curriculum planning and assessment, working with professional organizations, and other activities needed for faculty governance at the department, college, and university levels.
  • provide support for the mathematics community by encouraging the intellectual curiosity of mathematics students through undergraduate and graduate research projects and academic and career advising.

ABD Description
ABD with reduction in rank and salary: ABD will be considered for this position. Evidence of successful defense of the dissertation must be received by July 31 for a fall hire or November 30 for a spring hire. If confirmation of defense is not provided by the deadline, the candidate will receive a new one-year fixed-term contract and be hired at the rank of Instructor. The candidate's salary will also be reduced to a lower rate commensurate with other full-time instructors in the same department. However, if degree verification is provided before the end of the one-year fixed-term contract, the candidate will be returned to the rank of assistant professor with commensurate compensation beginning July 1 of the following academic year.

No ABD consideration: Only candidates with an earned doctorate or terminal degree from an accredited institution will be considered for the position. Since ABD will not meet the minimum requirements, ABD will not be considered.
