Accounting Supervisor

We are seeking an AccountingSupervisor in the Controller's Office who will be a member of the University Administration leadership team and provides guidance, oversight, and management in support of the mission of the Controller's Office. S/he plans, organizes, and manages a functional units or key tasks/projects within the Controller's Office. S/he possesses superior interpersonal, communication and collaboration skills in order to foster transparent and service-oriented relationships throughout the University. In support of the University's mission, s/he is responsible for developing, reviewing and implementing policies and procedures relating to their functional unit or task and for adherence to them. The Supervisor may interact with senior and executive leadership. S/he advises the University Administration leadership team on questions/issues related to accounting, finance and business processes. S/he may represent the University in a wide variety of forums internally and externally. S/he supervises large complex University-wide projects and efforts to improve University systems, business processes, or accomplish other significant University objectives in a collaborative, transparent and consensus building manner.

Job Scope/Complexities

Business decisions made within JHU are highly complex and must take into account the various customers that are supported across JHU in order to ensure appropriate consideration has been given. Requires advanced knowledge of accounting principles and government rules and regulations.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities

  • The responsibilities listed below are typical examples of the work performed by this position. Not all duties assigned to this position are included, nor is it expected that everyone in this position will be assigned every job responsibility.
  • Supervise and provide assistance/guidance for the following post award function processes: award setup, award closeout, financial reporting, and cost reimbursable invoicing in accordance with federal regulations and University policies.
  • Manages the workflow to ensure that deadlines and schedules are met.
  • Supervise and deliver the sponsored projects shared services training program for new/existing employees and research administration trainees.
  • Advanced capabilities in understanding the University's accounting systems to summarize data and perform various analyses.
  • Strong working knowledge of SAP, BW Report Center, Analysis, Coeus and Microsoft Office Excel including the SAP daily, monthly and year end closing activities.
  • Acts on behalf of the manager in the manager's absence.
  • Assist with the coordination of audits regarding sponsored activity including the year end audit and annual A-133 audit.
  • Maintain the data integrity of the University's accounting system in accordance with federal regulations and University policies.
  • Provide excellent customer service to divisions, departments and faculty and answer questions and provide information to sponsors and JHU personnel in a prompt, accurate and cordial fashion.
  • Provide training and support to departmental administrators pertaining to sponsored policies and procedures.
  • Supervise and coordinates staff to identify and implement business process improvements.
  • Maintain a working knowledge of Federal cost principles and administrative guidelines such as OMB circulars A-21, A-110 , A-133 and Uniform Guidance 2CFR Part 200.
  • Other duties as assigned by the Manager and/or Director of Sponsored Projects.

Strategic Planning

  • Provides information to senior leadership in order to make strategic financial decisions.
  • Based on an understanding of institutional goals, mission and culture, assess impact and effectiveness of business processes to ensure it supports the institution's needs.
  • Ensure that applicable JHU policies and procedures, and federal, state and local regulatory requirements are addressed and followed within her/his area of responsibility.
  • Works with constituents in conjunction with other financial leaders to interpret customers business needs and makes recommendations for strategic investments in business processes, personnel and technology that meets the agreed upon goals of the institution.

Relationship Management

  • Represents the Controller's office in administrative meetings both within and outside of JHU.
  • Manage customer relationships inside and outside of JHU
  • Create and promote the highest quality of services and support for our customers effectively and efficiently.
  • Foster a collaborative, transparent, and consensus building

Project/Financial System Responsibility

  • Supervise projects and efforts to improve business processes that satisfies customer needs and are essential to the ongoing operations of JHU.
  • Ensure continuous delivery of customer support and services through the oversight of service level agreements and financial quality control operations.

Staff Management

  • Supervise the recruitment, development, mentoring, retention and organization of staff.
  • Reward teams of highly qualified financial professionals and staff.
  • Oversee the development and implementation of an effective and efficient organizational structure that supports the ongoing operations of the institution within her/his area of responsibility.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree in Accounting, Business, Finance or related field. Additional education may substitute for experience to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.
  • MBA, CPA or MS Finance preferred
  • Five years of progressively responsible related work experience.
  • Additional education may substitute for required experience, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.

Role/Level/Range: ATP/04/PE
Starting Salary Range: $73,300 - $128,300 Annually (Commensurate with experience)
