Job Summary

Scottsdale Community College (SCC) is seeking a full-time English Residential Faculty who delivers instruction in English Composition to students from diverse backgrounds and cultures. This position delivers a variety of learning techniques and formats and utilizes classroom technology and Learning Management Systems. This English Residential Faculty position begins Fall 2025.

This position requires a physical presence on campus to best serve the students, department and college.

Essential Functions

* Instruction: Supervises and instructs students of various ages and diverse backgrounds in classroom, online, and/or lab settings. Instructing students in ENG, ENH, WAC, and/or CRW etc. courses, with an emphasis on developing the students' critical thinking and problem-solving skills. This includes utilizing various teaching methods to promote effective learning in students with diverse abilities, levels of academic preparation, ages, and socio-economic/cultural backgrounds.

* Course Development: Designs and develops written syllabi/course outlines, curricula, and instructional materials. This includes evaluating students' comprehension of the subject matter being taught by making and grading assignments, projects, quizzes, and exams.

* Student Support: Maintains office hours to assist and advise students; participates in department, campus, and district-wide committees. Holding academic support hours for students, with the purpose of answering questions that students may have over the subject matters being taught and/or providing academic advisement to students planning to major in a related discipline.

* Committees: Contributes to college governance by serving on college and/or district committees. This also includes collaborating with the English Instructional Council faculty in developing course and program curriculum; contributing to the English, World Language, and Journalism department's program reviews and improvement initiatives; and building and maintaining collaborative external partnerships.

* Professional Growth: Engages in professional growth opportunities to enhance subject knowledge and develop pedagogical skills. Residential faculty members are expected to model the profession's high standards through their commitment to excellence, innovation, integrity, and teamwork. Thus, it is necessary for all appointive faculty within the department to work together and keep their knowledge up to date to assure the students within the program are learning the newest skills expected of current graduates. Professional growth opportunities may be external, such as attending national or regional conferences, or internal, such as attending college or department training sessions.

Minimum Qualifications

For academic disciplines, a graduate degree is required. A faculty may qualify with any of the following:
  • Master's degree or higher in the teaching field OR
  • Master's degree or higher in any field with 18 graduate credit hours in the teaching field

Desired Qualifications
  1. Experience teaching Rhet/Comp-based First-Year Composition courses (ENG 101 and ENG 102) at the college level
  2. Demonstrable experience teaching hybrid and online courses (asynchronous and synchronous)
  3. Demonstrable knowledge of, and/or implementation of clear policies for appropriate usage, and/or experience with integrating artificial intelligence (AI)
  4. Demonstrated experience working with and/or teaching diverse student populations, in particular, Hispanic Serving Institutions (HSI) or Native American Serving Institutions (NASI)
  5. Experience using active, collaborative, and innovative learning techniques to engage students
  6. Experience using a variety of established instructional technologies (e.g. learning management systems, conferencing applications, publication tools)
  7. Demonstrated experience beyond standard composition teaching load (ie student engagement events e.g. Service Learning, professional development, and/or teaching in other related disciplines e.g. Creative Writing, Journalism, Literature)


Special Working Conditions
  • Travel to campus during the interview/selection process will be at the candidate's own expense.
  • May be required to travel to other MCCCD locations.
  • May be required to work evenings and weekends.
  • May require prolonged periods of sitting and viewing a computer screen.
  • May be required to lift or carry up to 25 lbs.
  • MCCCD does not sponsor individuals for any type of work visas.
  • This position requires a physical presence on campus to best serve the students, department and college.
  • This position is scheduled to start August 2025.
