Overview:

We are seeking a Senior Welding Technician who will focus on supporting Research and Development in Materials Joining and related advanced manufacturing technologies. This position resides in the Materials Joining Group (MJG) in the Materials Structures and Processing Science Section, Materials Science and Technology Division, Physical Sciences Directorate at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL).

As part of our research team, you will be involved in research and development activities in materials joining and related advanced manufacturing technologies. In this role, you will support multiple R&D programs related to materials joining and materials processing for a host of R&D staff, visiting scientists, postdocs, and students from the group, the division and other organizations of ORNL. The position requires demonstrated experience and knowledge to operate highly specialized welding and materials processing equipment, such as arc welding, laser welding, electron beam welding and other automated welding systems, as well as nondestructive and destructive weld testing and evaluation. Certification as American Welding Society Certified Welder and Certified Welding Inspector is highly desired.

Major Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Perform experimental welding activities as directed by the MJG group leader and other research staff members using arc, laser, electron beam, and friction stir welding methods.
  • Perform processing activities as described above for a variety of metals and alloys as directed by the MJG technician supervisor.
  • Perform duties of the Lab Space Manager (LSM) of Materials Joining Lab.
  • Plan, coordinate and execute the research efforts with/for researchers in concert with environment, safety, health and quality (ESH&Q) and craft personnel.
  • Maintain equipment, facilities, and systems in compliance with laboratory environment, safety, health, and quality (ESH&Q) requirements.
  • Document lab and research activities by creating records, writing reports, and project summaries based on project requirements.
  • Communicate (verbal and written) clearly, provide input and influence research efforts through interactions with researchers (group members, visiting scientists, post-docs, students, and interns) as well as craft supervisors and craftsmen.
  • Collaborate with MJG personnel including scientists, technical, craft, visiting scientists, post-docs and students for training and configuration of welding or testing equipment.
  • Must be results oriented and work independently with minimal instruction.

Basic Qualifications:

  • An ASdegree in a science or engineering related field.
  • Certified Welder by American Welding Society, or equivalent.
  • A minimum of 7-10 years' work and hands-on experience in performing manual and automatic arc, laser, electron beam, and solid-state welding/joining processes.
  • Background in production or research welding and manufacturing in R&D setting.
  • Experience working in R&D laboratories.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated experience performing procedure/performance qualification in accordance with national standards like ASME, AWS and API.
  • Certification as American Welding Society Certified Welding Inspector (CWI).
  • Familiarity with metal-working and melting processes.
  • Physical ability to lift billets of up to 40 lbs.
  • Demonstrated experience or certification in nondestructive testing.
  • Demonstrated experience in destructive testing of welds including bend, tensile and metallographic.
  • Demonstrated experience operating furnaces including vacuum, inert, air and reducing atmospheres.
  • Demonstrated experience in Gleeble thermomechanical testing, high-temperature mechanical testing, and mechanical testing under high-pressure hydrogen environment.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Motivated self-starter with the ability to work independently and to participate creatively in collaborative teams across the laboratory.
  • Ability to function well in a fast-paced research environment, set priorities to accomplish multiple tasks within deadlines, and adapt to ever changing needs.

This position requires access to technology that is subject to export control requirements. Successful candidates must be qualified for such access without an export control license.

Q Clearance:

This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a clearance from the Department of Energy. As such, this position is a Workplace Substance Abuse (WSAP) testing designated position. WSAP positions require passing a pre-placement drug test and participation in an ongoing random drug testing program.
