Job Summary:

About the Position:
This position is a part of our Physical Plant Department within the Facilities Planning and Management Division at UW-Madison. The Power Plant Operator assists in the operation, maintenance, and repair of boilers and chillers or varying types and capacities, and all associated equipment along with general operations and miscellaneous work duties.

About the Physical Plant Department and the Heating & Cooling Plant:
Physical Plant is the largest FP&M organizational unit and is responsible for the operation and maintenance of campus buildings, grounds, and utilities. Design resources, construction by the trades, and specialized facilities services are available for departmental requests and remodeling projects on a fee-for-service basis.
The Charter Street Heating & Cooling Plant and the Walnut Street Heating & Cooling Plant supply steam, chilled water, compressed air, and electricity to the UW campus, as well as to UW Hospital & Clinics, the US Forest Service Forest Products Laboratories, and the Division of Veterans Affairs VA Hospital, and some other non-campus customers.
Our plant operators also coordinate with the West Campus Cogeneration facility (which produces electricity for Madison Gas and Electric customers) on steam and chilled water needs for heating and air-conditioning on campus.

The Division of Facilities Planning& Management (FP&M) is a full-spectrum service organization that builds, maintains, and operates the physical environment of UW-Madison in the university's education, research, and outreach activities. We are responsible for everything from the building projects that change the face of campus to the flowers
that beautify the grounds.

Responsibilities:
Assists with the monitoring, operations, adjustments, maintenance, and repair for a variety of technical equipment for the campus Heating and Cooling plants to supply the campus with critical services.

  • 35% Ensures the safe and efficient operation of the plant and its associated equipment
  • 10% Makes regular inspections of plant equipment and prepares equipment malfunction reports
  • 5% Cleans and maintains work areas and equipment
  • 10% Starts, stops, and adjusts equipment settings to maintain operational requirements
  • 10% Maintains forms, logs, or reports
  • 5% Assists with preventative and corrective maintenance as needed
  • 5% Adheres to safety protocols and procedures
  • 5% Complies with environmental protection protocols and procedures
  • 10% Works under direct supervision while on shift operations
  • 5% Communicates to/with plant personnel to ensure operational and safety objectives are met

Required:
-Driver's License in accordance to UW- Risk Management requirements

Working knowledge of the following preferred:
Basic knowledge of boiler operation, valves, pumps, compressors, fans, and piping systems, and mechanical aptitude including the use of common hand tools.


License/Certification:

Drivers License - Valid and Meets UW Risk Management Standards

This position has a rotating schedule including nights, weekends and holidays.

It is anticipated this position requires work be performed in-person, onsite, at a designated campus work location.

Salary:

Minimum $32.88 HOURLY
Depending on Qualifications
The minimum hourly rate for this position is $32.88, but is negotiable based on experience and qualifications.
