Description

Researcher II will support activities in the Neurophysiology and Neuroanatomy lab of Dr. Ben Richardson in the Department of Pharmacology at Southern Illinois University School of Medicine in Springfield, IL. This laboratory address issues in understanding neurocircuits and their role in disease using a multi-level approach. The primary activities of Researcher I will be to support ongoing laboratory research activities, assist in laboratory management, and recording keeping. Under the direction of Dr. Richardson, Researcher II will also perform experiments using state-of-the-art techniques to dissect the function of neural circuits and assess behavior of animal models of neurodevelopmental disorders.


Examples of Duties

I. Administration 10%
1. Maintain commodity inventories for planned experiments.
2. Help obtain information relevant to making purchase decisions.
3. Help order approved laboratory supplies and reagents.
4. Assist with scheduling experiments, laboratory equipment usage and availability.

II. Teaching 0%
1. Assist in training new members of the laboratory.

III. Research 90%
1. Conduct investigator-initiated research projects under varied levels of supervision dependent upon training and confidence. Under the direction of the PI, postdoc, or in conjunction with graduate students, be able to:

a) Prepare reagents used for experiments with accuracy and consistency.
b) Perform rodent behavioral tests (social, motor, sensory) as designed.
c) Assist in and/or perform in handling and manipulations (injections, surgery) of live rodents (mice, rats) in line with approved protocols.
d) Perform histology (including microscopy) and neurochemical procedures as needed.
e) Perform data reduction and analysis.
f) Maintain detailed records of laboratory work performed.
g) Maintain the cleanliness and order of the laboratory.

Qualifications

MA/MS degree, or a BA/BS degree plus at least two years relevant experience.
