Project Management Specialist - Manufacturing Demonstration Facility

Overview:

Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) is seeking a project management specialist to support the effective delivery of advanced manufacturing research and development activities at the Manufacturing Demonstration Facility (MDF) to sponsors, from compiling information to preparing it for delivery through a variety of formats.

The MDF is home to a highly integrated fundamental-to-applied research program that develops new manufacturing systems, new materials based on processing, simulation of manufacturing processes, data analytics, metrology, advanced characterization of components and technologies for energy generation, storage, transportation, and efficient usage. Our research encompasses foundational science in chemistry, materials science, energy systems, materials processes, and computational solutions for manufacturing.

MDF is supported by the US DOE Energy Efficiency & Renewable Energy, Advanced Materials and Manufacturing Technologies Office (AMMTO). In addition, MDF also engages in cross-program activity with the offices of Fossil Energy and Carbon Management, Nuclear Energy, Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy, Electricity, and the Strategic Partnerships programs.

The role will work closely with the MDF director, MDF marketing manager, Advanced Manufacturing program director, and research staff to support sponsor relations for the EERE-AMMTO programs. They will assist in MDF business activities including writing and preparing various technical collaboration and commercialization case studies, highlights reports (fortnightly and quarterly), fact sheets and other handouts, and success stories to help inform sponsors of the impact of their funding. Additionally, the role will support the planning of visits to MDF by sponsors through content development and polishing for tours and presentations.

You will be a team player who can achieve work objectives independently, accurately, and successfully, requiring minimal follow-up. Familiarity with terminology of the technical community and research fields would allow the candidate to be intuitive and proactive in capturing ideas. You should be highly organized and have experience interviewing technical staff and translating scientific information into documents using brevity and plain language.

Main Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Research and write technical collaboration case studies for sponsors and industry
  • Compile highlights reports for directorate leadership and sponsors
  • Liaise with scientific staff and conduct interviews as needed to obtain and compile scientific and technical highlights and stories
  • Support the compilation and creation of presentations for industry and sponsors
  • Work with research teams to update and maintain handouts and related content provided to sponsors
  • Provide quarterly data updates on highlight submissions to MDF leadership
  • Compile content for display on MDF digital displays as needed to promote achievements of staff, MDF accolades, and welcome visitors
  • Occasionally provide support for in-house events, including MDF Innovation Days, MDF Peer Review, and workshops through working with event leads on the compilation of information for event websites and attendee handouts
  • Maintain the list of MDF honors and awards

Basic Qualifications:

  • BS degree in communications, business, science, or a related field
  • Strong ability to write succinctly for both long- and short-form content creation and for various formats
  • Knowledge of or ability to learn Chicago style
  • Ability to write for/communicate messaging to targeted audiences
  • Ability to translate complicated scientific topics to plain language for accessibility
  • Ability to self-organize and meet rolling project deadlines
  • Skilled at sifting through large amounts of information to identify key themes and prioritize based on audience and/or communications platform
  • Ability to use diplomacy, tact, and professionalism at all times
  • Ability to work well with others to create and deliver finished products such as reports, case studies, and slide decks

Preferred Qualifications:

  • General knowledge of manufacturing sciences, engineering, manufacturing industries and sectors, and related topics
  • Experience successfully communicating science to people in leadership positions
  • Solid knowledge of design and aesthetic principles
  • Knowledge of working within an established brand identity

Required Software Knowledge:
Microsoft Word, Acrobat, and PowerPoint with the ability to learn Smartsheet, Microsoft SharePoint, Teams, Planner, and Excel
